THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Today Gary commenced our meeting with the announcement that it is our 12th anniversary. Twelve years ago today, our club had it's first meeting in the US Grant Hotel.  Of the approximate 34 charter members, we still have 17 in the club today.  Gary also gave a review of last night's District Council meeting that we sponsored. One of the highlights was the Humanitarian Award presentation to

L-R:  Wayne, Lee Ann and Jennifer Cusisk (by this time Jennifer Cusick-Grebing), Gary Green and Jennifer’s fiancé Steve Grebing

our own Jennifer Cusick - congratulations! Gary did a wonderful job in representing our club at this meeting.

Maureen Eberle led us in the pledge, Alan Talbott gave the invocation, and Linda Jalving led us in a "repeat"  performance of the Star Spangled Banner.  Pete McGuire introduced our guests, visiting Rotarians, and Rotaract members.  We exchanged flags with a gentleman from Rome, NY.  Gary abstained from soliciting for money for the "Polio Tees Us Off" golf tournament - to be resumed next week.  Perhaps we will see the return of Peter (“Flutie”) Doody to sell raffle tickets as he did at the District Council Meeting.

Announcements

Ø      Nancy V. talked about upcoming community service projects, and asked us to please call her with any ideas that we may have for community volunteer opportunities.

Ø      Gary gave a special pin to the folks from our club who donated wheelchairs to Malawi, and shared his pride in the wonderful job we have done with this project

Ø      Tim M. will be the "organ guy" in our club... after the snickers subsided, Tim spoke to us about donating our organs to save others' lives. This is something simple we can all do to put "Service above Self". Speak to Tim about signing up for the program.  Click Here For Donor Registration Materials.

FINES

Frank De Francesco stepped in for Lou this morning, and after making a few "groaner" jokes (just like old times...).  Frank fined Tana C. for her 29th birthday, and "V" Anisimow. for something or other.  Alan Talbott bragged about his talented youngest son and his fencing acumen.  Lisa has just closed on her first home.  Linda Jalving opened her business, "Jewels by the Sea," in La Jolla 3 days ago, and Alan Talbott graciously paid her fine because she is carrying some of his wife's custom beaded jewelry in her shop.  Dave Ferguson flew to Denver to watch the chargers play (another groaner...).  Ron Erbetta is driving again – yippeeee.  Frank closed our fine session with a reminder that hockey season is opening ("Go Rangers"!)

This Week’s Speaker

Tana did a great job of introducing our speakers, Marsha Lubick and Teresa Graves from the Sharp Healthcare Foundation.  Marsha commented that Sharp is currently building an outpatient pavilion - the most comprehensive in the US - to open in 2004 (in case you were wondering what was going on as you drive by the hospital ).  Teresa filled us in on the new senior program downtown. Many seniors are mentally and physically challenged, especially downtown, and most have to figure out how to live on $700.00 per month. Many times, these folks "fall through the cracks".  Sharp saw the need to help the seniors in these categories and built an outpatient facility at 10th and Broadway. On their first visit, a patient will receive a 1 1/2 hour evaluation, and a treatment plan is implemented. There are many benefits to a program such as this including less  911 calls, and less evictions. It is a model for other programs nationwide.

Barbara, a volunteer for the S.C.C. shared with us the fulfillment she has found in helping at the facility. After she lost her father, she knew she wanted to align herself with an excellent organization whose mission is to  help seniors, and to treat them with respect and dignity. This Sharp program exemplifies these qualities.

Gary closed our meeting and reminded us to keep our "Service Above Self" attitude this week!
