Lesa Chang was also fined, reason not clear.
THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER
Dave Donnelly introduced Jim Herrick, Executive Director of the San Diego State University Alumni Association. Jim has been with the Alumni Association for the last 3 years and worked in the Athletic Department for 15 years. The mission of the Alumni Association is to facilitate connections between the University and its alumni and friends. President Weber’s vision is to provide educational programs that meet the employment needs of San Diego. Examples are the new construction management degree and a program on regulatory aspects of the biotech industry. San Diego State has 34,000 students 200,000 alumni. Tuition is still only $2,100/year. The University raised $52.7 million last year and received $140 million in grants and contracts. The university has community educational outreach programs such as the City Heights program that has led to less teacher turnover in the inner city area, and the contracts for success program for Sweetwater District 6th and 7th graders providing a roadmap for admission to SDSU.
Mr. Herrick answered a question about SDSU’s recently publicized schism with philanthropist John Moores. Mr. Moores has given $27 million for the athletic complex. Answer: a public fiasco. Mr. Herrick also responded to a question about the controversy over the Aztec’s mascot, Monte Montezuma, who now sits in the stands. Jim indicated President Weber has not changed his stand on the clearly still popular mascot.
