THIS WEEK'S MEETING

President Gary opened the meeting and asked for assistance with a blanket drive.  Rob Berry has agreed to chair that drive.  President Gary also announced that the Board will meet Tuesday, November 12, at 5:30 pm, at his home.  Red badgers are encouraged to sign up to attend.  Jim Mulvaney led us in an excellent rendition of “America the Beautiful.”  Keith French gave the invocation.  Pete McGuire introduced guests. 

Announcements

Ø      Gary reminded us about the upcoming golf tournament on November 15 benefiting polio eradication.  Raffle tickets are still for sale for wonderful prizes.  We have 200 tickets left.  We are still soliciting raffle prizes and Gary has a sample letter for this purpose.  Golf play is $600/foursome.    In addition there will be a live auction for items like an alternative fuel vehicle donated by Mike Lewis and Pearson Ford. 

Ø       President Gary announced that the Rotaract Club raised over $2500 during its Juvenile Diabetes fundraiser which was held on October 23. 

Ø      Melissa Blackburn pitched the Rotary Foundation dinner at the Natural History Museum on November 16; tickets are $49.95.   Raffle tickets are $25.00 each for various prizes.  She also asked us to support Senior Community Centers, by turning in candy or donating to the purchase of candy.  Melissa sold a European Circus at Balboa Park

FINES

Sergeant-at-Arms Lou Scanlon fined Mike Whitehurst, Gary Tobias and Lisa Cheng  for birthdays and anniversaries, and then held everyone accountable who did not have their Rotary pin on. All Rotarians not wearing their Rotary pins were hit up for a $5 dollar fine. 

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER

Dave Donnelly introduced Diz Laird, former pilot in the Navy.  He spoke to us on his many battles in WWII.  He joined the service in 1941and was a member of the 18th squadron.  After six months of training he became a fighter pilot.  His stories involved many of his battles, and the fact that many of his contemporaries were lost during his stint in the military.
