Gary opened the meeting with his trademark monologue, touting our commitment to 3 charities: Thousand Smiles, Responsibility and the Alpha Project. Each one of these worthy causes received valuable contributions from our Club this morning.
The pledge was led by Nancy Vaughn. Linda led us in song with “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and Tom Sayer delivered the invocation. Pete McGuire introduced 3 Rotaract attendees and a number of other guests.

This Week’s Speaker
|
L-R: Gary Green, Terry Tanaka and Jennifer Cusick |
Shawn Moore, the current president for Thousand Smiles and a member of our Club, introduced our guest speaker Terry Tanaka. Terry is one of the founders of Thousand Smiles. Thousand Smiles is a completely volunteer run and operated endeavor to help children in Tijuana, Ensenada, Baja California and a few other areas that was started in 1985. They provide dental surgery, facial prosthesis, general/orthodontic/preventative dental, some hearing, speech therapy and psychiatric evaluation for reintegration into the mainstream. There are a number of clinics run in warehouses and medical facilities. In 1988 the Montebello Rotary Club donated a mobile dental unit/trailer; however, all surgeries are performed at the Ensenada General Hospital. Monies are donated from worldwide Rotary Clubs, The Drown Foundation and matching grants. All donations are used for the children. All personnel are volunteers and materials are donated. Over 140 volunteers help in all manner of ways. Dental knowledge or experience is not necessary. Volunteers can help with translating, crowd control and a number of other duties. On that note the next clinic is scheduled for Feb. 1st and 2nd in Ensenada. Shawn has room for approx. 10 people. He has one van available for sure, but is working on another van. If there are enough people interested. Our club presented Terry and Shawn with a check for $1000.
