this week’s meeting
|
Francis Parker Choir |
Gary opened the meeting by announcing that we are celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Day brunch this morning, since we will be dark for two weeks. His realization that we are half-way through his presidency was met with first a sigh of relief followed by hearty applause. Gary then launched into a recitation of goals achieved to date, including:
Ø Successful participation in VVSD Stand-down;
Ø Support of Alpha Project with several truck loads full of clothes donated;
Ø Continued support of Kids-At-Heart (more effort is needed on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the One America Plaza building mezzanine);
Ø Continued support of Responsibility;
Ø Continued Support of Thousand Smiles;
Ø Hosting District Council for the first time with 50+ members present;
Ø Incredibly successful Polio Tees Us Off Golf Tournament with $30,000 raised;
Ø 19 new members inducted to date;
Ø Attendance at an all-time high;
Ø Speaker program continuing to exceed all expectations;
Ø And the list could go on and on.
Gary then invited Judge Patricia Cowett to lead us in the pledge followed by Dave Clarkson delivering the invocation. The Francis Parker singers then sang a few carols for us to get us in the holiday spirit.

BRAGS AND BITCHES
New member Shanta Chevli gave Maureen Eberle $100 towards her Leukemia Society triathlon goals.
Lynn Hamilton noticed Alan Talbott was not present, so the coast was clear to brag about her son whose team won the All-Star soccer tournament.
Michael Clarkson proudly reported that his 87 year old father made it to San Diego despite a recent fall and then modestly noted that his company (conceived over a beer) just reached the million dollar mark (less the $100 he contributed for the brag)!
And with a rare Presidential Fine, Gary announced that his daughter has given him his first grandchild!
Student of the Month
|
Brianna Alpert |
Carol Jensen and Keith French introduced Brianna Alpert, Student of the Month from San Diego High School. Brianna serves as the Editor of the Yearbook and aspires to start her own magazine one day. Her immediate goals are to study art and journalism at UCLA or USC and then later attend New York University of another east coast college specializing in visual arts. Good luck, Brianna!
Member Recognition
Gary recognized three members today for their extraordinary service. Carol Jensen for tireless assistance with the golf tournament, Dave Ferguson for his generous sponsorship and for bringing in golfers, and Duane Horning for locating sponsors to donate our Club banner and the hole sponsor signs at the tournament.

this week’s speaker

Bob Kelly |
The Speaker was Bob Kelly, President and CEO of the San Diego Foundation (and the only Club 33’er to play in our Polio Tees Us Off Golf Tournament). The theme of the Foundation this year is, “The Tradition of Giving.” Bob took us through a series of slides describing the history of the Foundation and its goals, the psychology of giving, how the Foundation competes for the charitable donation, and some stories of gifts from specific donors.
The Foundation was founded in 1975 with a $10,000 grant from the San Diego City Council. It now manages $366 million in funds and grants approximately $38 million per year to various causes. It’s goal for 2005 is to annually grant $50-60 million, which means it must increase its managed funds to $1 billion. Some of the interesting donor stories include:
Ø One woman donated her home for the purpose of assisting practicing Catholics in the Carlsbad and Encinitas areas to attend Catholic universities.
Ø One woman wanted to support the Symphony but didn’t trust it with the money, so she donated it to the Foundation to manage for the Symphony.
Ø One family had saved money for their daughter’s college tuition but she died in a car crash. They donated the college fund for the purpose of scholarships for San Diego residents. The donors then transferred to Wa. DC. When one recipient was unable to get home for the holidays, she spent Thanksgiving with the donors.
Ø Molly Hunter donated $5,000 for the purpose of maintaining the American flag at the downtown library. Now the fund is able to maintain the California flag as well.
