this week’s meeting
Gary opened the meeting with greetings for the New Year and then invited Mike Milligan to lead us in the pledge followed by Judge Patricia Cowett delivering the invocation on Success by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Linda and Jim each led us (simultaneously) in differing versions of “America The Beautiful.”
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø Gary thanked Colette Murray’s for another great Rotary Holiday Party at her house.
Ø Abraham (“Abe”) C. Kuttothara, M.D., the International Chairman For Youth Exchange for 2000-02, spoke on the incredible benefits of this Rotary program. It would cost $20-30,000 in food and board to send a child to a foreign country for school, but this cost is fully absorbed by the program. 70,000 students in the past 10-years have traveled abroad, gaining greater understanding of other parts of the world. Dr. Kuttothara concluded by noting that our current issues with terrorism would never have arisen if Osama or Saddam had spent a year of their youths with a host family in America through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. It is this progress towards world peace that is generated from this tremendous program.
Ø PDG “Dollar” Bill Sturgeon thanked our Club for contributing towards his recent trip to the Philippines where Rotary eye surgeons dispensed over 8,000 prescriptions and performed over 125 operations, including two operations to restore the sight to patients who were diagnosed as permanently blind!
Ø PDG “Dollar” Bill Sturgeon added a pitch for Dr. Kuttothara’s daughter who is finishing law school and would like to practice in San Diego. Anyone with leads should contact Abe at 419-994-3983.
Ø Mike Gilligan announced sad news with a silver lining. Ron Erbetta, who has undergone numerous surgeries to fuse his ankle, has now undergone an amputation of his foot. The silver lining is that the path is now clear and promising with the many prostheses available today. Ron will be back from the hospital this weekend and would love to hear from us sometime next week. His home number is 619-224-4661.
Sgt.-At-arms
Lou announced birthdays of Pat Moore, Linda Fox, Jim Lauth and Dave Archambault. Alan Talbott received a fine. Jim Mulvaney paid dearly for a picture in San Diego Magazine of his wife, Donna, in connection with a charity event. Judge Patricia Cowett was featured in this month’s San Diego Lawyer for her creativity, not in sentencing but also in her artwork! Duane Horning paid for something to do with his wife turning 21 or something like that. Frank De Francesco had a perfect game bowling. Tom Sayer lost (instead of gaining) weight over the holidays. And Lynn Hamilton donated $100 towards Maureen Eberle’s Leukemia Society triathlon goals.

Capt. Leonard E. Shea USN (Ret.) |
Captain Leonard E. Shea spoke today about the coming memorial to the USS San Diego, the 2nd-most decorated warship of WWII. Capt. Shea comes to us from the USS San Diego CL53 Memorial Association, Inc. The purpose of the Association is to:
Ø Inform San Diegans of the remarkable record of the USS SAN DIEGO CL-53 and her crew during WWII.
Ø Honor the ship and her crew by erecting a permanent memorial at the foot of Broadway at Broadway Pier in San Diego.
Ø Establish a museum of USS SAN DIEGO memorabilia and artifacts on board the USS MIDWAY Aircraft Carrier Museum.
Ø Continue publication of "THE FIVE INCHER" newsletter, first published on board the USS SAN DIEGO in 1943.
The memorial association is California Non-profit corporation established February 1999 and is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.. They have 480 members throughout the United States. The Port Commission has already approved the site and the Association has raised 86% (all but $120,000-$140,000) of the funds needed to complete the memorial.
