Past-President Melissa Blackburn called the meeting to order--stepping in to fill Gary's shoes (moving day for Gary). Shanta Chevli gave a clever invocation on -ATIONS (Click Here For Invocation); Jim Mulvaney led us in song; Pete McGuire introduced the many guests, including guests from as far away as Finland and Ireland.

the month from San Diego High School, Brigna Mohammed Aziz. Brigna, an immigrant from Afghanistan (then Russia) and fluent in 5 languages, wants to study journalism or linguistics at UCSD or Berkley upon graduation in June.

Ø Ambassadorial scholar Vanessa DuBois, introduced her special guests, from the project "Yo-Yos for Youth. Alan (from Honolulu) gave us a summary of the project, which is a leadership program given at school assemblies, teaching young people how to yo-yo, and how to teach the yo-yo. Dave (from Minnesota) demonstrated. Steve Huang is the local contact for Yo-yos for Youth, if you would like to sponsor a yo-yo, a class, or an entire school, or otherwise help. Ø Special Guest, District Governor Larry Scott spoke to us regarding the status of Rotary projects and upcoming events. The next District Conference will be held May 2-4, 2003, in Laughlin, Nevada – a joint effort with District 5320 in Orange County, and promises to be a fun-filled and important event.
Ø Maureen Eberle advised the club of the upcoming RYLA Program – Rotary Youth Leadership Program, in Idlywild in March this year. Our club sponsors 4 youths, and Maureen asks that anyone willing to assist with the interviews please contact her (to begin the first week in February). She also requests an additional volunteer to serve as a facilitator for the young people with her. Maureen gave a brief footnote, asking for donations to her triathlon efforts for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- April 6 event.
Ø On Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 7:00 PM, Serving Hands International (SHI) - which services over 100,000 persons annually in Baja -is hosting a benefit. 400 guests and dignitaries will gather to honor and thank SHI business associates and friends including Ms. Joan Kroc and Mrs. Helen Copley and countless others who make our community a better place to live, on both sides of the border. A video review of SHI's projects last year will launch our 2003 1 on 1 Partners program. Please come! We really want to share this evening with you. Reception starts at 5:00 PM. Limited guest tickets available on a first come basis. The Center is located off the corner of 69th and University. Enter via the Aragon St entrance. Community Development Specialist, who spoke about "Lifesharing", community organ and tissue donations. Sharie, who is the recipient of a liver over 7 ½ years ago, urged us all to actively decide whether we are willing to donate organs and tissues, by both indicating on our driver's licenses and letting our families know our intentions.
