this week’s meeting

Gary welcomed all members, visiting Rotarians and guests, and apologized for missing last week’s meeting due to moving from his palatial and spatial surroundings of Mission Hills to his Pied-a-Terre Downtown.  The Pledge of Allegiance was given by our guest speaker Brian Quinn and the invocation by Jane Barry.  Linda and Jim led the group in the singing of our National Anthem, followed by one chorus of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”.  Michael Clarkson introduced our visitors and guests.

Program

Mark and Brian

Tana Cleaves introduced our first guest Mark Rogandino from the San Diego Sockers.  Mark went to SDSU, and has worked in sports radio and TV in Los Angeles before returning to San Diego.  Mark is currently the play-by-play radio voice of the San Diego Sockers; he also works for the Sockers organization in the PR department and ticket sales division.  Mark spoke with great admiration for working with one of the most successful sporting franchises in American sports history – 10 Championships in 11 years!

Mark reminded us of the upcoming “Youth Jersey Night” on February 6th at the San Diego Sports Arena – kids get in free when wearing a sports jersey.

Mark introduced our main speaker, Brian Quinn.  Brian was a star player with the San Diego Sockers, first arriving in San Diego from top English team Everton for a try-out when he was just 21 years old.  Brian collected 8 Championship rings during his playing years and is now in his 5th year as coach of the Sockers.

Brian said the team has 2 main objectives.  First, to win!  And second, to get out in the community.  The players and staff have committed to making at least 40 appearances during the season at schools, hospitals, charities and organizations like Rotary.

Growth in the standards of soccer excellence has risen meteorically in the last 12 years, with the best years of skill development occurring in the 16 to 20 year old group.  The only thing missing is large fan support and major sponsorship.
