this week’s meeting

Mike Whitehurst led us in the pledge of allegiance.  Jim Mulvaney led us in singing America the Beautiful.  Jane Barry gave a moving invocation from the prospective of a soldier from Valley Forge. It let us know that the people responsible for our freedom are the soldier. Freedom of the press is not given to us by the reporters but by the soldier. The invocation ended by reminding us that the best gift we can give our soldiers is the gift of prayer.  Pete McGuire introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians.  There was a letter our visitor from Finland thanking us for the visit and sending their club flag.

announcements

President Gary Green looked smashing in his grass skirt and Hawaiian shirt and made the following announcements:

Ø      He was dressed like that because of the theme of this year’s fundraiser. He asked people to guess and Frank piped up with: “Survivor Mission Beach?” Good guess but the theme will be Margaritaville. It will be held on Saturday May 3rd at the Catamaran. The first part will be outdoors on the bay and then moving upstairs for dancing and dessert. We can accommodate about 200 people and are encouraged to bring friends and colleagues. Prizes are always needed if you have something to donate or can get someone else to donate.

Ø      Linda Fox spoke further on the event letting us know that there is plenty of room for volunteers for the committee. There will be meetings every 2 weeks on Wednesday night. The next one will be at Linda’s office next Wednesday, February 26th at 501 W Broadway. Maureen Eberle has arranged for rooms for $139 rate if you want to make a weekend of it.

Gary has a goal to have all red badgers complete the tasks for their blue badges. The requirements are:

Ø      Attend District Event or District Council

Ø      Make Up at another Rotary Club

Ø      Give an Invocation or Chair of the Day talk

Ø      Join a Committee

Ø      Write a Bulletin

Ø      Attend a Board Meeting

Ø      Bring One non-Rotarian Guest to a Meeting

Gary is also going to be re-instituting the 5 minute red badger introduction. Red badgers can fulfill requirement #3 by standing up for 5 minutes and telling us a little about themselves.  Gary has another goal to have 15 new Rotarians by year end. He is looking for quality not quantity, though.

Ø      Melissa Stoneham, President of Rotaract thanked us for our support at the last fundraiser and told us that it is again that time of year. It will be March 27th at a restaurant at 5th and Market and is to support the Youth and Community Centers Storefront project which is a 20 bed emergency center for runaway homeless youth. It will have a casino theme and you will receive $200 worth of gambling chips. Please support the Rotaract by attending.

Ø      Frank asked for everyone to please attend the board meeting and give input on the fundraiser, golf tournament, both?

Ø      Jill Houska asked for support for Globe Guilders to support the Old Globe Theatre. They are having an Oscar De La Renta fashion show and need donations for the silent auction.

FINES!  FINES? FINES!

Lou made Gary give up his straw hat for fines. Everyone without a Rotary pin got the obligatory $5 fine. There were the following birthday fines: Margaret Oppliger – February 10, Alan Talbott – February 15, and Joe Marshall – February 20.

Ø      Pat Cowett was fined for asking Tiger Woods’ mother for her autograph and not getting it because she didn’t have a pen.

Ø      Jennifer Cusick Grebing was fined for putting on her makeup and grimace in the mirror behind Lou in traffic. She pointed out that her name is now Grebing (I hope that is right Jennifer!). She also pointed out that Lou was driving too slow for that street and straightened him out on the correct speed for going down that road.

Ø      Texas City BBQ doubled as a chapel this weekend as Roger Hedgecock married two couples there.

Ø      Brad Perry was fined for being quoted in an article.

Ø      Melissa Blackburn bragged about a letter from the Senior Community Center thanking us for the candy for Valentines day.

Ø      Lynn Hamilton’s sons were both called to play on the Scripps Ranch All Star Basketball team.

Ø      Gary then fined Shawn Moore for catching the soccer ball at the Soccer game and Tom Sayer for kicking the opening ball out – 9 feet wide!

this week’s speaker

This week’s speaker was Vanessa Mathews the Director of the Partners Mentorship Program. This program provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10-17 in the San Diego area from all over including mid-city and East county.

The program is a 6 month program that matches kids and mentors one on one. Mentors meet with their youth 2-4 hours per week for 6 months to socialize, help with homework or just to talk.

The program steps are:

Ø      Contact Partners

Ø      1 on 1 interview with Partners

Ø      Background check

Ø      12 hours of training

After completion of the above steps, the mentor is then matched with a youth.  There is always a backlog for boys and currently they need 25 male mentors. Female mentors are also need but they have less of a back log.

Other ways to help include: donating time for office work, supplies, direct cash gifts, and sponsorship of group events.  There web site can be found at: www.partnersmentorshipprogram.org.

Closing

In closing, Gray mentioned that we had received a thank you letter fro the Community Elder Care Center for the $2000 we donated from Edward Thompson the treasurer.

Gary also received a letter from the District Governor letting us know we are up for an award for potentially exceeding our goals for the year. Only 10 clubs are eligible and Gary will be working to provide the information required to see if we can win!
