this week’s meeting

Joe Marshall led us in the pledge of allegiance.  Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving led us in singing America the Beautiful.  David Dawson gave the invocation reading the poem often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson entitled “Success”.

Success

To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

Pete McGuire introduced the guests and visiting Rotarian.

announcements

President Gary Green and others made the following announcements:

Ø      Assistance is requested for the fundraiser scheduled for May 3, 2003 at the Catamaran.  This is sure to be a great event and help is needed to make it a smashing success!  (My words not Gary’s).  Please consider participating with the fundraising committee.  They are meeting today at Linda Fox’s office on the 19th floor of the Koll Building at 501 W Broadway at 5:30pm.  You can jump in an assist this group at any time.  This is a great way to get to know fellow Rotarians.  Also, when you are out and about the city/county please ask establishments you frequent to donate items – dinner for two, theatre tickets, products, etc.  It is easy to do!

Ø      Alan Talbot announced that he is in charge of ticket sales for the fundraiser.  Tickets are $75 per ticket.  Please encourage friends, colleagues, former Rotarians from the club to attend!

Ø      Gary called Melissa Blackburn, Linda Fox and Kim Stewart up to the front to present them with a check from the club for the Women’s Resource Fair which took place this past weekend.  The Resource Fair is for homeless and battered women and their children.  The need is increasing.  They served 384 women and 150 kids through the fair.  They were able to have more service providers this year which was great.  Over 550 volunteers prepare and work the fair.  Great efforts – wonderful that we can serve and contribute to their work!  The Women’s Resource Fair will next take place on February 21, 2004.

Ø      Gary indicated that he will be adding the “Chair of the Day” to our meetings on a semi-regular basis.  If you are a Red Badger you can do this in lieu of or in addition to the invocation.  It is Gary’s goal to have all Red Badger’s be Blue Badgers at the end of his term (16 weeks).  If you have not done an invocation please sign up for it or request to be “Chair of the Day”.  Chair of the Day is really about getting 5 minutes or so to talk to the club about who you are your family, what you do in Rotary etc.  Come on Red Badgers – let’s go!

Ø      Nancy Vaughan indicated there would be a Community Services committee meeting after the regular meeting today.

Ø      Evan from Rotaract mentioned the Ace of Hearts Monte Carlo night fundraiser they are hosting which will benefit Storefront.  Information sheets are available.  Let’s all support this great cause!

Ø      Gary gave Barry Tobias the prize he won in the fundraiser 11/2002 – a set of crystal knives!!  Barry was delighted!

Ø      Melissa Blackburn pointed out the information regarding the Art Preview Reception this Friday, February 28, 2003 at Sparrow Fine Art in Solana Beach.  The proceeds go to bringing the children of Chernobyl here to San Diego to give them some respite.  The Children of Chernobyl Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a mission to provide care, compassion, relief and hope to the people - especially the children, of Chernobyl.  You may see samples of the art at www.cofcsd.org.    For more information about the event contact cofcsd@yahoo.com or call 619.699.2411.

Ø      Nancy Vaughan encouraged everyone to call into the Humane Society telethon this Saturday which is this Saturday and on Fox 6 at noon.  Nancy will be answering phones!  Give her a call!  Also, Linda Jalving has an artist in the store that does Pet Portraits and in the first hour of the telethon the pet portraits will be featured.

Ø      Mike Jones did a wonderful job of introducing and inducting Caroline

Gary, Caroline Chen and Mike

Ø      Chen into our Rotary club.  Let’s welcome her and help her get involved – and for those with art and travel interests sit next to her next week and get acquainted!

Ø      Mike also discussed that the Membership committee will be helping to shepherd Red Badgers through the process to Blue Badge with a goal that all current Red Badger’s will be Blue Badgers by the end of Gary’s term.  If you are a Red Badger – the requirements are simple and straightforward and completing them is an indication of your commitment to Rotary and the club.  Power through them – come on!  (Yes, I am a Red Badger – this bulletin is my last requirement!  Yeah!)

FINES!  FINES? FINES!

Ø      Thank you George Thomas (the poor police officer carrying a gun with no bullets due to budgetary problems in the department) for collecting fines.  This is what happens when you are a guest of Louis Scanlon’s I guess!  You get put to work!

Ø      Alan Talbot - his age and his birthday finally caught up with him!  Happy Belated Birthday Alan – thanks for playing!  February 15, 2003 was his birthday.  Louis doesn’t let anyone get away!

Ø      All the “Pinless” folks got slapped again for $5.  Are we ever going to learn?!  (No, I am not in the collective “we” – I had my pin on today!)

Ø      Jim Mulvaney bragged a bit about Dylan being on 7th Heaven episode last week and it cost him!  Way to go Dylan – he is in demand it seems.

Ø      Martin Blair got to share great news and was willing to pay for it – his sister had a kidney transplant yesterday (husband was the donor) and she is doing well!  Great news!  Send prayers for a speedy recovery for both patients!

Ø      Keith French bragged a bit about a raise, a significant promotion and title change – it cost him also!  Congratulations Keith!

Ø      Linda Jalving – she a wonder!  She promised 1% of December profits from her store to Rotary and she delivered a check today!  Thanks Linda!

this week’s speaker

This week’s speaker was Dr. Michael Bernstein a professor of history at UCSD.  Michael spoke to us about American Foreign Policy in the Wake of 9/11 and the

Gary and Michael Bernstein

impending war with Iraq.  He started out discussing how two key questions seem prevalent in students and people he talks with today.  The questions are “how did we reach this situation?” and “why are we so hated in the Near/Middle East?”  Michael then gave historical context - spoke of historical lessons based on policy decisions made post WWI, WWII, in the Nixon, Ford, Carter eras, etc. that play a role in where we are today.  Interesting to note how far we have come – from being viewed as “liberators” during the world wars to maybe liberators – maybe invaders now.  He left us with the question we all need to ask about the current situation: “what is this for and what exactly will it achieve?”
