this week’s meeting

The aging Gary Green (Club President) began the meeting promptly at 7:25 a.m. with a brief history lesson on the origins of the 4-Way Test and its creator Herbert J. Taylor.  Duane Horning led the Pledge of Allegiance, Bobby Spinner-Flack provided the invocation (entitled “I Worry About the World”), and Jim Mulvaney led the morning musical.

Attending the meeting today were 18 non-Rotarian guests, and 13 visiting Rotarians.  There was a brief debate over the upcoming Marquette v. Kansas college basketball game, and it was decided that Club members who are fans of the losing team will pay $100 to the Club.

Gary, Susan Bleicher, her RB Club Sponsor, and Mike Jones

A new member was inducted today (the 31st new member under Gary Green’s term as Club President).  Susan Bleicher (introduced by Mike Jones) is a transferring Rotarian from the Rancho Bernardo Club having joined the Bernardo club in 2000.  Personally, she was born in Dayton, Ohio and moved to California in 1974 where she later obtained a bachelors degree.  She is married (six years) to a man named Steve.  She enjoys tandem bike riding with her husband, and entertaining dinner guests at home (Gary announced that he and his wife are available as dinner guests).  Professionally, she works in the human resource field and founded At Work Staffing Services, a staffing agency specializing in the temp to hire area.

Four Way Test Speech Contest Participants

Today the Club hosted the Regional Semi-Finals 4-Way Test Speech Contest.  The judges were introduced by Nancy Vaughan.  After the competition it was announced the two finalists are Jay Nathan (who applied the 4-Way Test to his choice of attending college) and Alana Massie (who applied the 4-Way Test to America’s culture of fear), the Second Place Finisher is Erica Palmer (who applied the 4-Way Test to the meaning of life), and the First Place Finisher is Lilly (who applied the 4-Way Test to making ethical and moral decisions).

The winners of the above speech contest will compete in the Regional Finals on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, during the District Council meeting at the La Jolla Marriott (Note to Red Badgers: Attending a District Council meeting is a Red Badge requirement).
