Will The Real Jim Mulvaney Please Stand Up!

President Gary Green began the meeting promptly at 7:25 a.m.  Gary announced our Club is a candidate for a citation of service by our District, and welcomed the morning speaker, Jim Mulvaney, Sr.  This year we have inducted 31 new members, and Gary set a goal of 38, to double the previous record achieved by past President Alan Talbott.

Tony Eppert led the Pledge of Allegiance.  New blue-badge member Pat Cowett provided the invocation, with an inspirational piece on “enthusiasm.”  As a special treat, the usual song leaders, Jim Mulvaney, Jr. and Linda Jalving were joined by Jim Mulvaney, Sr., who led, “God Bless America.”

Peter McGuire introduced the non-Rotarian and visiting Rotarians guests.

Maureen Eberle reported on successfully completing her first triathlon, the “Lava Man” in Hawaii.  Maureen endured unexpected heat, and running through lava fields, coral, and soft sand, to finish in 3:16.  Maureen’s team raised $215,000 to defeat lymphoma and related cancer diseases.

Today the club celebrated four red-badge members earning their blue-badge:  Shanta Chevli (not pictured), Pat Cowett, Kay Zurn and Lesa Chang.

This past Saturday, April 4, 2003, approximately 10 Rotarians from our club, plus several family members and friends, served lunch at the downtown Senior Center.  T.J. Barnes organized a very successful event, with colorful balloons center pieces, candy and fortune cookies.  The clients were extremely grateful and blessed by the event.

student of the month

This months’ Student of the Month is Ruda Testamichael.  Ruda was born in Africa where her country was at war.  She and her family escaped to the Sudan.  Ruda is active in New American Health Advocacy Program.  She has earned a 4.3 grade point average, and is admitted to UCLA where she will study psychobiology.  Ruda plans to be come a pediatrician.  She will be the first person from her family to go to college.

FINES

Sergeant at Arms Lou Scanlon collected fines and heard brags and bitches.  Losers and winners of the NCAA grudge match shared their grief and joy (mostly grief) by contributing $150 to the kitty.  Ron Erbetta drove to today’s meeting for the first time.  Melissa Armstrong and Jennifer Cusick Grebing celebrated birthdays.  Joe Ciokon contributed his $5.00 in abstentia for his anniversary.

SPEAKER

Melissa Blackburn introduced this week’s speaker, Jim Mulvaney, Sr.  Jim is a Navy veteran and has been a trial attorney since 1948.  He founded his firm, Mulvaney, Kahan & Barry APC, in 1973.  Jim is a quintessential community leader, with numerous well-deserved awards and a remarkable record of public service.  Jim led the Padres organization from 1955 to 1978, chaired the United Way organizing committee in 1958, and has chaired and founded numerous other prominent San Diego civic and volunteer organizations.  He was named “Mr. San Diego” in 1991.

Jim spoke on the value of volunteerism.  As a 40-year Rotarian, Jim cited volunteerism as a hallmark of the Rotary organization.  Volunteering is a distinctly American tradition.  One of our great exports has been Rotary to inspire volunteer service in countries around the world.  In the United States alone, 84 million volunteered in 2001, contributing a value of $234 billion, equal to 9 million workers.  Americans also gave charitably another $299 billion.  Volunteering not only feels good for the effort, it also gives perspective on what is important in life.

Jim salted his speech with humor as only he can do.  He closed with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem on Success, which was also a recent invocation.
