Ø Gary attended the Rotaract meeting last night (see photo)and was very impressed with their accomplishments. Thanks to a very successful fundraiser, they were able to present a check for nearly $3,000 to Coastal Community Center, a group who helps homeless people in Ocean Beach. Altogether they raised about $5,000. Gary also gave special thanks to Martin Blair, who has served as Rotaract’s mentor and host for several years.
Ø Our club has been nominated for a Presidential Citation award! Gary read the nomination letter which included some of the highlights – 32 new members so far this year, $29,000 raised for Polio Plus, and our active participation in service, such as Stand Down, house building in Mexico, and much more.
Ø There is a board meeting tonight (4/16) at Gary’s home.
Ø We then returned to the Jane Barry-fest, when Carla, an exchange student from Brazil, shared her thanks with the club, most of which revolved around Jane’s hospitality, brilliance, wisdom, and much more! But seriously, we are all grateful to Jane for opening up her home to Carla and providing her with such a wonderful San Diego welcome.
Ø The International Service Committee will meet next week after the meeting in Jennifer Grebing’s office.
Ø Linda Fox announced the sale of opportunity drawing tickets in conjunction with our fundraiser. Prizes include trips for 2 to Hawaii and Palm Springs (thanks Joe Marshall!). Alan Talbott and Carol Jensen encouraged all of us to attend. Every member will be billed for two tickets, but Carol needs to know ASAP if you’re actually planning to be there.
Ø The La Jolla Rotary Club is offering a Paul Harris Fellow match to anyone who makes a gift of $500 to Polio Plus. This is a wonderful opportunity to support a good cause and become a PHF for only half the usual amount.
Ø Vocation Day is April 30th. 4 Tours are currently scheduled, and a 5th at the Mighty 1090 was added on the spot.
Ø For those who weren’t able to bring candy today for the Senior Community Center, Jennifer Grebing is accepting monetary donations, and Melissa Blackburn will go out and purchase more.
Ø TJ Barnes thanked the members of our Club who participated in Senior Service day.
Ø A hard-working group of 6 people participated in last Saturday’s Heart-to-Heart care day. They painted more than half of a 2500 square foot teen community center, and only quit when they could no longer lift their arms!
Ø Susan Millard Davis announced that our club is sponsoring a table at the Senior Community Center’s Heroes luncheon on May 9th at the Sheraton Harbor Island, and passed around a sign-up sheet.
Ø As our final announcement of the day, Evan from Rotaract presented Gary with a picture taken at their Ace of Hearts Fundraiser, and thanked the Club for all of our support (see photos. The first photo is Evan presenting Gary with a blow-up of the second photo).
Speaker
Joe Marshall introduced our speaker - Dr. Sam Bozzette, MD, PhD. After reading a bio far to impressive to list here, Dr. Bozzette came and shared a presentation he made just last week to the Rand Corporation and Yale University: “A Model for a Smallpox Policy”.
Dr. Bozzette has been actively involved in crafting a public health response to a potential smallpox attack. Although smallpox was essentially eliminated in 1980, it poses a risk higher than Anthrax because it is highly contagious.
There is a vaccination for smallpox, but it carries risks – 50/1,000,000 experience serious complications, with 1-3 deaths.
Based on 6 attack scenarios (the most serious of which was spraying in an airport), and 5 policy options (including ring vaccination and isolation), his final recommendation was that vaccination for health care workers makes sense now, but that vaccinating the general public is still outweighed by the risks.
The meeting ended promptly at 8:30 a.m.
