This week's Bulletin was written by Mike Gilligan

this week’s meeting

President Green opened what was to be a raucous meeting at 7:30 a.m.  Dave Dawson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and T.J. Barnes was an excellent “pitch-hitter” for the invocation when she enjoined us in a prayer for World Peace along with the “Our Father.”  Rotary’s own “Fred and Ginger” aka Jim and Linda led us in a resounding and apropos version of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”  Pete Mc Guire did his usual splendid job of introducing our guests and visiting Rotarians.

Announcements

The announcements were almost terminally delayed until our President-elect, Frank, had the good sense to cut off President-lame duck, Gary, who was determined to use up his cache of old jokes and witticisms.

Ø      The Mighty 1090 “groupies,” formerly known as the Women of Rotary, were in rare form with “sexist” chants, signs and catcalls for our guest speakers.  It was almost embarrassing.

Ø      Don Lang, our esteemed Treasurer, is recuperating from open-heart surgery and we all wish Don a speedy return.  (Gary is worried about the money.)

Ø      Frank announced that our club will be the beneficiary of the Mighty 1090’s golf tournament this year and will be assisted by Tony Eppert.

Ø      Ron Erbetta said sponsorships for the fundraiser were still available which was all our distinguished President needed to pull out his “arm-twister,” He succeeded in immediately getting several $125.00 donations from loyal members as well as a gracious $250.00 from Tim Montague and Pat Moore.  The fundraiser is Saturday, May 3rd at the Catamaran.

Ø      Gary reminded us that the La Jolla Club will match a $500.00 donation for anyone wishing to become a Paul Harris fellow.

Ø      Rick said the Tijuana home-building group is almost full for this Saturday, but has a few openings due to last minute cancellations.

Ø      Bill Poirier announced that the club will be “dark” next week due to the five Vocational Services Day spots which we will be visiting.

Ø      Gary totally bombed out on trying to sell an all-expense-Rotary “vacation” to beautiful downtown Laughlin, NV.  Ron Erbetta said, “Come on Gary, we might have been born at night, but not last night!”

Speakers

Billy Werndl, Gary and Steve Mason

Frank, as newly appointed CFO for the Mighty 1090, was responsible for our guest speakers and working the ladies into a frenzy.  Yes, sports fans, today we were delighted to have the dynamic, 3pm – 7pm drive-time duo of Bill Werndl and Steve Mason.  They entertained us with many anecdotes and humorous stories from the world of sports.  They told us that San Diego is really the birthplace of sports talk radio.  Steve survived many years in Ohio reporting on the scintillating Toledo Mud Hens (what is a mud hen?) and Bill really showed his metal by lasting through all the lousy teams in Philly.  He was smart enough to bring his own breakfast today, i.e. a Philly cheese steak and a Snapple.  Rumor has it that Frank had something to do with this gratuitous display of sponsor-backslapping!

Both of these men were very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable in their fields even though they threatened to take only the questions tossed to them by their “groupies.”  Everyone had a good time and there was no doubt as to the energy level these fellows bring to their fans.  They are thrilled to be in San Diego and on the Mighty 1090 and we are lucky to have them here.
