VOCATIONAL SERVICES DAY
COPS
The annual Vocation Day Tour of the San Diego Police Department commenced promptly today at 7:00 am. After (Chief-to-be) Lou Scanlon broke out his bag of SDPD’s quarters to pay for our meetings, we were treated to bagels, coffee, orange juice etc. ( we all asked “Why no doughnuts?”). Lou is really relishing the leveling of a huge fine on Judge Cowett for tardiness.
Lou pointed out the Armed Forces stars around the building’s entrance which represent members of the SDPD who are serving in Iraq. In comparison to other big city departments San Diego has 1.3 police officers per 1000 citizens. NYC for example has 9/1000. The department operates on an annual budget of approximately $260m, 92% of which goes toward personnel. The department’s geographic coverage is 340 square miles.
Lou escorted us on a very interesting tour. It was like being on the set of CSI. We visited Crime Stoppers, Video Room, Forensics, Robbery/Homicide, 911/Communications and last but not least the Property Room. This is where all sorts of things are stored as evidence. When we were there a detective was inventorying a box of counterfeit and stolen “putter” heads.
We all enjoyed this visit and everywhere we went, Lou was greeted with “Good Morning, Chief!”, so perhaps they know something we don’t. Thanks, Lou.
THE MIGHTY 1090

Gary,
Billy Ray Smith, “Francesco De Francesco,” Joe Ciokon and Scott Kaplan in the
morning talk show studio. |
A large contingent of mostly men (with the exception of Carol Jensen) checked out the new Mighty 1090 station in UTC. Morning jocks Billy Ray Smith and Scott Kaplan gave the Club ample on-the-air recognition due in large part, no doubt, to the fact that they were off later that day to a VIP onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln courtesy of Joe Ciokon. Our breakfast was donuts and coffee, but minutes later some gorgeous La Peep girls brought in eggs benedict for the important people. You could have timed that one a little better, Frankie! Of course, President Gary didn’t even notice the food! Anyway, many kudos to Frank for getting our local airwaves properly filed with San Diego sports info. Pearson Ford Alternative Fuel Vehicle tour
Mike Lewis hosted Pat Moore, her daughter, Dave Ferguson
and Alan Talbott for a tour of the construction site of the Regional
Transportation Center (www.rtc4afv.com)
at Interstate 15 and El Cajon Blvd.
We met at Pearson Ford, then boarded electric cars for the quarter mile
trip to the site. (Your author,
Alan Talbott, agreed to write this if he got to drive). Mike has been in charge of the entire
project, which gives new meaning to the term multi-use:
Ø A
showroom for alternative fuel vehicles and new Fords.
Ø A
multi fuel "gas station" offering 6 different alternative fuels: Natural
Gas, Ethanol, Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel, Bio-Diesel, Propane, and Electricity. In addition, the standard varieties of
gasoline will be available.
Ø A
vehicle service center specializing in alternative fuel vehicles.
Ø A
large education center for alternative fuels and conservation.
Ø A
"stealth" Ford dealership.
Ø Thousands
of square feet of high quality office space for rent.
Ø A
platform for a huge blue oval "Ford" sign.
The project should be done in about 6 weeks, and I
encourage you all to visit, even if only to get gas. It would be great to have one of our breakfast meetings at
the education center to celebrate the opening. –Alan Talbott.
Jewels By The Sea
Five jewelry-loving ladies met with Linda Jalving at Jewels by the Sea. They started with breakfast at the Deli-iscious Deli in the courtyard, and then walked to Linda's shop. They took the "grand tour" - 183 square feet covered from floor to ceiling with clothing, jewelry, art and more! The women engaged in a lively discussion about jewelry and gemstones, and Linda gave a brief presentation on Estate jewelry, which included a description of jewelry from different periods in history. Linda supports Rotary's efforts by offering scarves made by the "Somali Handicraft" women, as well as offering art by Marko Ramos, one of the mural painters for the San Diego Zoo, and a dedicated environmentalist who is using the proceeds from his work to build a school in Peru to teach children art and ecology. There were smiles galore, and after a fun "show and tell" session, a few of the jewelry pieces found wonderful new homes! Thanks to all who made their way into La Jolla to visit Jewels by the Sea. –Linda Jalving.
