THIS WEEK’S MEETING

L-R: Pat Cowett, Gary, Mary Dawe, Mike Jones, Tony Eppert and David Mc Quade.

Gary opened the meeting promptly and reported that this year’s fundraising event was a great success. He made a concerted effort to thank all Rotary members for their support and assistance in helping to make the event a great success. For those members that missed the event, you had also missed Mike Gilligan dancing to a Jimmy Buffet theme.  Was Mike actually dancing?  The debate continues, was it dancing or was Mike’s body having epileptic seizures?  We would like to thank the wonderful co-chairs of this year’s fund raising committee, Linda Fox and Christine Thompson. With out those two outstanding ladies and all the board members of the fund raising committee we would not have been as successful as we were. Ron Erbetta was able to raise $11,250 in sponsorship funds.

The pledge was led by Jim Mulvaney followed by an insightful and apropos invocation (true to the speaker’s theme) delivered by Brad Perry.  Jim and Linda then led us in, “It’s a Grand Ole Flag.”

Two New Members

The following new members were inducted this morning: Mary Dawes (sponsored by Honorable Pat Cowett) and Dave McQuade (sponsored by Tony Eppert).  Upon induction as a new Rotary member, Dave Mc Quade decided to tell a joke. Unlike many of Gary’s jokes, Dave’s joke actually was humorous and brought considerable laughter (Ed. Note:  Yes, it’s open season on Gary in his last few weeks as President!).  Our guest speaker Roger Hedgecock stated “It is the only joke that I know that has the word ‘hump’ in it and won’t offend anyone.”

Blue Badgers

Gar and Roger Hedgecock

Gary proudly announced the following members have fulfilled their blue badge requirements:  Linda Fox, Duane Horning, Mike Gilligan, Tony Eppert, Tim Montague and Sigmund Weitzman.  Hugh Largey and Jennifer Cusick Grebing also received new blue badges with updated information.

This Week’s Speaker:  Roger Hedgecock

I am grateful to be in San Diego. San Diego is a wonderful city, one of the very best in the entire world. Roger spoke on some concerns facing San Diego. First, the concern of growth management in San Diego, more specifically San Diego‘s inability to keep up with its growth. The growth of the city is dependent upon the airport being moved to a more suitable location such as Miramar.

Rush Limbaugh made talk radio what it is today. With talk radio, we have more choices for information now than we ever did. We have a large variety of opinions. Technology provided us with choice.

Operation Home Front:

An effort created by Roger Hedgecock to support military families in need, focusing on enlisted military personnel that can not afford to pay to fix their cars and other similar miscellaneous expenses.

It was a pleasure to listen to Roger speak about the evolution of talk radio started by Rush Limbaugh and the troubling issues of growth and expansion that San Diego faces in its eminent future.
