THIS WEEK’S MEETING
Gary opened our meeting today by announcing the success of our fundraiser and assured us that the final accounting will be accomplished by June. He gave us an update on Don Lang and asked all of us to remember Don in our prayers. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Pete McGuire who has just had extensive hip surgery. (Ed. Note: Ron Erbetta reports, “I just got off the phone with Pete (now my fellow 'Hippie')...he sounds good and is having a much better day today....yesterday was tough as is usual the day after hip surgery. He said the Doctors were happy with the surgery and he's got one of my old rooms at Green Hospital overlooking Torrey Pines Golf course and the ocean (great sunsets!). He is hoping to be home tomorrow or Friday.”)
Gary reminded us that we only have 5 more meetings with him as President before he turns the podium over to Frank. The “promotion/demotion” dinner for Frank and Gary will be at held on June 24. Rumor has it that there will be plenty of “Gary roasting” as his year as president comes to a close; it promises to be a fun evening—mark this on your calendar as a “not to be missed” event!
Jason Arnold led us in the pledge, Alan Knobloch the invocation and Jim Mulvaney and Mary Engles in singing America the Beautiful. Christine Thompson introduced our guests as well as visiting Rotarians.
Announcements
Ø Ken Juen was inducted as a new member sponsored by Kay Zurn.
Ø Our Student of the month, Christobal Rosas, joined us this morning and received his plaque and gift certificate. Christobal explained that he came to the United States from Mexico in order to gain an education and help support his family.
Ø Joe Ciokon reminded us of the Veterans Stand Down on July 11. Volunteers are needed.
This Week’s Speaker
|
Reint Reinders |
Our guest speaker, Reint Reinders, President/CEO of the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau (ConVIS), was introduced by Maureen Eberle. Reint discussed the Hospitality/Tourism Industry and the impact world events have on our economy. He highlighted the changes that have occurred in San Diego with respect to the hotel and convention industry and the importance of downtown San Diego to future development. Details were given regarding the numerous projects that are currently in the works such as the completion of the ballpark and new hotels as well as future projects including the San Diego Zoo’s Master Plan, Sea World Expansion, Mission Bay Park, DeAnza Cove and the UTC re-invention plan.
Reint talked about the changes we are currently seeing as downtown moves toward an urban environment with the development of more housing units and how he sees this area taking its place as the future center for living, working and entertainment. He concluded by saying that there will be major changes in San Diego in the next 10-15 years.
In my conclusion, I would like to say hurray, hurray this completes my list of tasks to move from a “red badger” to a “blue badger!”
