THIS WEEK’S MEETING - Announcements

President Gary Green got us started at 7:30 AM (sharp!) by asking that all "Red Badgers of Courage" consider making up at other clubs as a way of building relationships and spreading good will.

He also let us know there are ONLY FOUR MORE MEETINGS until the end of his term (Phewww!), and that the Demotion Party will be held on Tuesday, June 24 (two days before my birthday).  It will be held at the San Diego Yacht Club this year, and is expected to start at 6PM, and spouses and partners are welcome!

Gary also brought to our attention that our speakers next week would be Jeff Dusek and Woody Clarke, prosecutors in the Westerfield case.

We are anxiously awaiting the final tabulation for the fundraiser, and look forward to another record breaking event.

Lisa Chang led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  TJ Barnes provided us with a thought provoking invocation.  Pete Doody introduced our visitors and guests which included Costa Dillon, Superintendent for the Park Ranger Training Center at the Grand Canyon, Dave Ferguson who was back from yet one more trip, and one visiting Rotarian from Australia.  See what you missed by not being at the meeting?!

And then, of course, Gary left the meeting early, but he did it the right way.  Please, folks, have respect for our speakers by introducing yourself to them before the meeting starts and tell them that you wanted to introduce yourself and apologize but that you would have to leave early.  It's just not appropriate for you to walk out the back without doing so, and our esteemed President, Gary, once again serves as a model of behavior for us all.

new members

We inducted two new Rotarians into the Club this morning, and are pleased to welcome Christopher Blin and Jerrilyn Malana.

Back Row:  Gary, Mike Jones and Chris Blin

Front Row: Judge Cowett and Jerrilyn Malana

Christopher was sponsored by Lee Weekley, and has traveled to 81 countries including driving from one tip of Africa to another (but what the heck was he picking up hitchhikers for?).  He's also a dual citizen of the United States and Australia, so let's all learn how to speak Aussie.

When Chris met the Queen of England at an awards ceremony, she asked Chris if he had any hobbies.  Chris told her that he was, in fact, a photographer.  The Queen then looked at Chris and said, "That's interesting.  I have a brother in law who is a photographer."  Chris then looked at her and said, "That's interesting.  I have a brother in law who's a queen."   Gary Green has finally been upstaged…

Jerrilyn is an attorney with Littler Mendelson specializing in labor and employment law, so give her a call if you want to fire anyone.  OK, call her if you want to hire anyone as well.

more announcements

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW (my medal is at home in my bureau), there is still time to take advantage of an incredible offer of a $500 matching gift by the La Jolla Rotary Club.  Folks, this is usually a $1,000 value (I sound like an auctioneer) which you can pick up TODAY for only $500.

This Week’s Speakers

Ashley Kowal and Elias Salgado with Maureen Eberle

Maureen Eberle then introduced Elias Salgado and Ashley Kowal, two juniors at San Diego High School who recently attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards weekend in Idyllwild.  This program is sponsored by Rotary Clubs throughout San Diego County for outstanding high school students who are considered future leaders or our community, and it is a program that deserves our attention.

Ashley started by telling us how much of an honor she considered it to be by attending, and how the messages from the guest speakers really stood out with her.  She is currently maintaining 3.8 GPA, wants to attend Syracuse University where she hopes to major in Public Relations, and aspires to be a mentor to  other students.

Elias is on the high school baseball team, and thought Rotary was just a group of people that got together every week to sing…think about it.  He was taken by the importance of setting goals and achieving them, and was hoping to discover creative solutions for challenges that need to met at San Diego High.  He came to the realization that weekend that his best course of action was to focus on the school first and yourself second.

We were then allowed to return to our cells at 8:20 AM while Gary Green was slowly twisting in the wind down at the courthouse.
