THIS WEEK’S MEETING
The meeting started promptly at 0736 when our new benevolent despot, Frank De Francesco, was torn away from his abundant breakfast to ring the bell for his first time. As you know he replaced the outgoing demigod, Gary Green.
Frank announced his intention of supporting all Charities and allowing reasonable floor time to those who are involved outside of our club activities.
The meeting started off with a rousing rendition of the Hokey Pokey, led by Dave Archambault and Jim Mulvaney, who refused to lip synch. Those who drank their breakfast participated enthusiastically and us sober ones stood around somewhat embarrassed.
announcements
Ø The first order of business was a reminder that the Annual Veterans stand down is this Saturday and Sunday 0700, at the Upper Athletic Field behind San Diego High School off Park Blvd. It is suggested that volunteers park behind the field.
Ø The first Annual Picnic and Barbecue is at the model yacht pond in Mission Bay, July 20th 11 to 3PM. Click Here For Directions and Event Information. Please bring your own alcohol, no bottles please and bring enough for everyone, thanks in advance.
Ø Thanks given to all from Tana for donating clothes and receiving a tax write off.
Ø Fresh vegetables are available from our benevolent despot’s garden at a suggested donation of only $5 per bag. Please buy some so he will remain benevolent.
Ø Justin Blair, from Rotaract, announced Margarita Madness night at the Lime in the Gaslamp District this Thurs 6PM. I’m sure Frank will be there early. Also we are invited to attend Rotaract meetings, 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6:30 PM at KC Barbecue. Tom Cruise attends on occasion.
Ø Please sign up for the invocation and to lead the pledge. (Just what is an invocation?)
Ø Board meeting next Monday evening at Frank’s office, 3655 Noble Dr, La Jolla UTC just off Rte 5 near the Mormon Church. Alcohol and DUI are at your discretion. Board meetings are on the 2nd Monday of each month.
Ø The 7/23 meeting will be at the Maritime museum, usual time. This is an outstanding facility; let’s hope the catering is also.
Ø Details will be forthcoming about a VIP tour of Petco Park for us. I guess they know who the movers and shakers of the community are.
Ø Clara Harris, Assistant District Governor, was gracious enough to attend today and explain her duties in the District and to assure us that the DG will be watching Frank. She stressed the importance of getting involved and participating in Club and District events. Clara has a long and varied relationship with Rotary and is a good source of information.
Ø All the incoming and ongoing committee chairs were recognized, their names and contact info are on our web site, everyone is encouraged to find a committee that matches their interests and contact that chairperson to offer help and support.
Ø Ron Erbetta shared with us how anxious he was to serve as dictator for life starting next year and it is never too early to start kissing up.
Ø According to our new Sgt. At Arms, Bill “Big Belly” Poirier, fines will be down and embarrassment up for those who transgress the rules this year.
Ø The speaker next week is Tony Perry, an embedded reporter during Operation Free Iraq. This should be very interesting and will make it easy to bring guests. Remember the goal is 10 new members this year.
Ø Also Bonnie Dumanis will be the speaker for the last meeting of the month. That makes 3 interesting meetings in a row. Good job, Pat Cowett. You can email her if you have suggestions for speakers; the schedule is full until October.
Ø The Co-Chairs for the annual fundraiser will again be Susan Davis and Tim Montague. The details are to be announced and the goal is to raise lots more money than the last one.
Ø The Golf Tournament will be held this year on November 4th at the Meadows Del Mar course. This is a celebrity event with 36 foursomes and a cost of $300 to participate. I understand that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Afleck will be playing. Something for everyone.
Ø Jennifer Grebing and Lynn Hamilton are the Social Function Co-Chairs and would appreciate suggestions for events; they have already rejected beer bashes at the opera so you know where their heads are at.
Ø Frank is emphasizing a mentoring program for new members and is asking for help from past Presidents and Committee Chairs, except from Gary Green, who is taking the year off to recover from his term as Demi-God.
The theme of Frank’s reign is involvement in the club, the district and get to know each other better. By getting involved you will come to know your fellow Rotarians to the point that exchanging hugs will seem natural. Visit other clubs and bring back ideas and fresh thinking.
Ø Lend a hand to the club
Ø Lend a hand to your vocation
Ø Lend a hand to the community
Ø Lend a hand to the world.
Thought for the day: What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it’s all about.
