THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER

Pam Russell |
Club’s Foundation Mentor. Pam discussed The Rotary Foundation to help us understand its mission.
The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. The Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of $26.50 in 1917 to more than $1.2 billion today.
Pam commended our Club for its work with Monarch High School, San Diego Senior Community Centers, Vietnam Veterans Stand Down, and other charitable projects. However, in addition to our ongoing efforts, Pam challenged us to explore other charitable giving opportunities through The Rotary Foundation.
The Rotary Foundation has 3 primary areas for giving: (1) Permanent Fund, i.e., gifts to The Foundation as testamentary gifts through a will or estate plan; (2) Restricted Giving, i.e., monies donated for primary projects, matching grant programs, and special projects; and (3) Annual Giving [unrestricted giving]. Pam encouraged our participation in Annual Giving.
The Rotary Foundation has several donor recognition categories:
Ø Sustaining Member: $100 per year
Ø Paul Harris Fellowship: $1,000
Ø Paul Harris Society: $1,000 per year
Ø Major Donors: $10,000 or more
Ø Permanent Fund Donors:
Ø Benefactor: $1,000 or more
Ø Bequest Society: $10,000 or more
Pam shared our Club’s statistics with regard to giving: Of approximately 95 to 100 members, we have 76 Paul Harris Fellows and 3 Benefactors. Our average per capita contribution is $70; last year our per capita contribution was $349.
Pam reminded us that The Rotary Foundation Seminar is this Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the Salk Institute Auditorium. Additionally, The Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Gala will be held on November 1, 2003 at the Town & Country Hotel.
In closing, Pam left us with a profound quote to ponder by
Bhichai Rattakul, Rotary International’s Immediate Past President:
“If we could feel the pain of those who suffer, would we continue to let them suffer?”
Frank De Francesco thanked Pam Russell for her time and continued support of our Club. Frank adjourned the meeting at 8:30 with the following words of wisdom:
"The last of human freedoms is the ability to choose one's attitude."
