THIS WEEK’S MEETING
Jay Sener put on the Official Greeter badge and welcomed one and all. President Frank De Francesco called the meeting to order promptly at 7:33 a.m. David Dawson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Mary Engles, gently coerced by President Frank, performed both the invocation and song-leader duties, opening the eyes and throats of Rotarians with She’s a Grand O’ Flag. Michael Clarkson introduced several guests, including four visiting Rotarians.
Announcements
Ø District Council is set for Oct. 14 at the La Jolla Marriott. A sign-up sheet was circulated.
Ø An Interact symposium is slated for Nov. 3-5. Let Frank know if you’re interested.
Ø The sign-up sheets for leading the Pledge and invocations still has some holes in it. Members are encouraged to be bold, fill in the gaps.
Ø Entertainment Books will be made available at next week’s meeting – a good value at $40.
Ø Fore!! There are still foursomes available for the Nov. 4 tourney. Organizer Tony Eppert said a Mercedes and Crossfire are among the prizes. A hole in one? No problem. Carol Jensen needs more raffle prizes; please contact her is you have ideas.
Fines and Brags
Ø Ron Erbetta slipped back into town from an extended vacation back to Massachusetts. Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Poirier fined him for enjoying himself too much at the Maaablehead Haaavard Club.
Ø Bill fined himself for his forgetting to mention Melissa Blackburn’s 12th anniversary.
Ø Linda Jalving has adopted a new avocation – selling cars. She paid for the privilege of announcing she has a ’93 Camry for sale, in mint condition . . . honest!
Ø Jim Mulvaney called attention to his 5th anniversary Sept. 26.
Ø President Frank teased us with “listen to the Mighty 690 for a ‘major announcement’ this Friday.”

Speaker
Carl Poirot, executive director of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP), explained the unique mission of his organization – to provide pro bono legal services to the indigent community. The program is staffed by 11 full-time attorneys, but relies heavily on hundreds of community-minded lawyers who take on 3,000 cases annually, helping victims of domestic and elder abuse as well as children in foster care and people with HIV/AIDS facing discrimination. Carl said the program also features several legal-assistance clinics located in the community. He said that equal justice is fundamental to a free society, but “unfortunately it costs a lot of money.” He believes lawyers have a responsibility to provide pro-bono services, but it still takes some gentle arm-twisting at times. “My job is to make their refusing to help as difficult as possible,” he said.
At the conclusion of Carl’s comments, Nancy Vaughan presented him with a $1,000 donation from our club in support of the SDVLP’s annual women’s resource fair.
Next week’s speaker will be Dr. Don Lindburg, deputy director of the Panda Conservation Group for the San Diego Zoological Society.
