SPEAKER
Professor Kathi
Diamant of The Kafka Project was introduced by the Honorable Patricia
Cowett. Prof. Diamant is a writer,
actress, playwright and professor at SDSU and is a former co-host of KFMB TV's
morning TV show "Sun-Up San Diego." She talked about Dora Diamant, Franz Kafka's last mistress
(e.g. life with, during and after Franz Kafka's death).
Kathi Diamant's
obsession with Kafka has been ongoing for over 20 years. Here
is an excerpt from the San Diego Jewish Journal written by Sue Garson that
pretty much stated what Kathi talked about during our meeting; this article
stated it best:
In addition to
sharing the same birth surname, Dora and Kathi, born approximately half a
century apart, shared an unbridled passion for Franz Kafka. Although he died
before a serious body of work was published, more than 15,000 books in every
major language have been written about this misunderstood novelist.
With funding
from Hadassah International Research Institute at Brandeis and the SDSU
Foundation, Kathi has immersed herself in Dora's and Kafka's lives. She has
literally retraced Dora's steps in Europe, where she has discovered civil
records, neglected archives and lost papers. She has visited Kafka's grave in
Prague, the sanitarium in Austria where he died, Dora's grave in England, the graves
of Dora's parents in Poland, the Isle of Man and the kibbutz where Dora dreamed
of settling permanently.
Dora's life
story is still unfolding. In addition to Kafka's 30 letters to Dora, at least
70 more letters written to Max Brod, Kafka's best friend and biographer, are
still missing. For this reason alone, Diamant speculates that Dora's biography
is still a work in progress.
Meeting ending at
8:30 AM
