Speakers

Steve Brown and Fary Moini of Golden Triangle Rotary shared their exciting endeavors to bring educational opportunities to Afghanistan, more specifically, to the community of Jalalabad.  With $200,000 raised, they worked closely with Afghan government officials, community leaders and construction professionals to build a 14-classroom elementary school for some 400 students.  The project, scheduled for completion in February ’04, will offer an improved learning environment over the current Unicef-tent classrooms. A set of World Book encyclopedias is also being sent to replace resource books, some of which are 50 years old.  The Rotary is also sending over 12,000 college-level English dictionaries and working to establish a computer lab for university faculty. Steve said that as important as the humanitarian efforts are, just as important is this opportunity to demonstrate the goodness of America.

Cynthia Villis, associate provost for the University of San Diego, provided an update on the City Heights-based Somali Sewing Project, also sponsored by Golden Triangle Rotary.  To date, more than 150 women have completed sewing courses offered through the project, developing new skills for employment. Falis Budul, leader of the Somali group, expressed her appreciation to Rotary and the “great job you do around the world.”

Drawing

Remember – gotta be present to win.  Frank De Francesco won the Fish Market gift certificate on a second draw.
