Speaker

Jerrilyn Malana introduced Lucy Killea as this morning’s speaker.  "Government of the people, by the people, and for the people..." This is Lucy Killea's political, professional and personal philosophy for her former constituents and all the citizens of California. Former State Senator Lucy Killea is perhaps most well-known for her eighteen years of service as an elected official, serving on the San Diego City Council (1978-82); in the California State Assembly (1982-89); and in the State Senate (1989-96). Dr. Killea, an American and Latin American historian, was also one of the first individuals to "recognize the importance of communication across the California-Mexico border" and therefore helped to found Fronteras de las Californias, "a nonprofit liaison with Mexico funded by the City of San Diego, UCSD, and private corporations." Dr. Killea's career reflects her commitment to women's issues and improving women's lives. While serving in the State Assembly, Lucy helped to create the bipartisan Women's Caucus; she fought for years to "implement a licensed midwife program" which passed in 1993; and has been a pro-choice advocate, maintaining her position even in the face of strong opposition.  After leaving the Senate, she served as president and CEO of the International Community Foundation for nearly five years.  She currently is working as a consultant to an independent bi-partisan committee seeking to provide input on solving our budget crisis.  Her message to our group was one of hope that an objective perspective from outside of government might break the deadlock between the two political parties.

Frank rang us to order and promptly invited Duane Horning to lead us in the pledge.  Linda Jalving delivered the invocation, encouraging us to, “Pay Our Kindness Forward.”  Then it is was a “Jim and Linda” duet with a round of Jingle Bells.  Ken Juen introduced our guests, visiting Rotarians, and dignitaries such as Assistant DG Mel Gallegos (rumored to be considering our Club for a transfer).  It was good to see Pauline Getz back from Poway.

Announcements

Ø      The date for this month’s Board Meeting has been moved to December 15th – Frank is going to play Dirty Santa, so you won’t want to miss it!  This apparently requires that you bring a wrapped gift with a value of $15 or less that you would prefer not to bring home with you!  Otherwise, you will be fined $15.

Ø      District Council is coming up December 9th – Spots still available and the Club picks up the tab!

Ø      Ron Erbetta reported on the 2005 Centennial Committee to celebrate RI’s 100 years of service.  We will be having a Gala celebration on July 17, 2005 on the USS Midway!

Ø      Lynn Hamilton and Linda Spuck reminded us to come to the Rotary Holiday Party at 6-8 pm on December 12th at the San Diego Historical Society (Casa Del Balboa next to the Prado in Balboa Park).  This event is free, and please bring your spouse/guest.

Ø      Gary Green will be collecting clothes, blankets and any other contributions for Project Alpha to assist homeless in San Diego.  Please bring your donations to the meeting next week.

Ø      The Midway Museum will arrive at North Island for provisions on December 23rd and then will be towed to Seaport Village on January 10th.

Ø      You are cordially invited to a complimentary afternoon of spectacular music featuring Marine Band San Diego and special guest appearances by two members of the San Diego Opera as the USO of San Diego thanks San Diego's community and military for the support they have given in the past year. Beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13th in the Civic Theater, the concert is free and open to all who wish to attend. Concertgoers are asked to bring a toy for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program and to enjoy the music of the holidays!

Ø      Mike Lewis donned the Santa’s helper cap this morning, and distributed the Responsibility Letters To Santa.  Each letter should be answered with gifts of a value between $55 and $75 and boxed (but unwrapped) together with the letter taped to the outside of the box.  Collection will be the meeting of December 17th.
