This week’s Bulletin was written by Jason Arnold

Happy New Year to all!

This week’s Rotary meeting marked the first of the new calendar year for our club.  Along with all of the usual suspects, several guests including members of Rotaract, other clubs and friends of existing members joined us.  It was standing room only!  Must have been a few Rotary Resolutions this New Year’s Day!

We started the meeting off with an invocation by Jill Houska and were led in “Auld Lang Syne” by Jim and Linda.

Announcements

Speaker Patrick Khouse

FINES

Bill Poirier raffled off Hollywood Video and Staples gift cards as well as a “re-gift” box of chocolates.  Margaret Oppliger took home the much sought after prize package.  Birthday wishes to someone and 21st anniversary wishes to David and Diane Archambault.  Jim Mulvaney relished in the joy of sharing a society page picture of his wife who chaired the annual Grossmont Hospital Gala.  Lots of brags and bitches, too many to recount.  But suffice it to say that Dave Ferguson may not be answering his door to Rob Berry’s daughter on October 31st anymore!  And Ron Erbetta will probably be spending a little more time at Viejas this year!

This Week’s Speakers

Judge Pat Cowett introduced our first speaker of the year, Patrick Khouse.  He had quite a story to tell.  Once a very successful financial advisor and entrepreneur, Patrick was caught up in a fraudulent bond trading scam involving the state of Oklahoma.  His story took us on a very interesting journey that followed his path from success, to hiding in South America, to prison and all the way back to success again.  His presentation centered on professional ethics and why smart people do stupid things.

All in all, it seemed most people felt a sense of relief that the holiday season is behind us and were looking forward to the hope of a new year.
