This Week’s Speaker:

Kristian Haus of Partners Mentorship Program introduced this little known support program for 10-17 year old children considered to be “at risk”.  These are often children of single parent homes that have had a brush with the law, displayed signs of truancy or demonstrated some other behavior that would indicate future trouble unless they receive some sort of positive intervention. The program requires a 6 month commitment from its adult volunteers, aged 21 or older, providing training and support after matching a volunteer with an “at risk” client. Mr. Haus indicated many of these relationships developed into meaningful lifelong friendships. Primary differences between this program and the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Clubs include accepting older aged kids and the fact that these kids, while not violent, often are first time offenders in some trouble with the law. When asked, Mr. Haus responded that the program enjoys a success rate in the range of 90% in keeping kids out of trouble once they have gone through the program and an even higher percentage of success getting students to graduate from high school. While depending heavily on government grants in the past, 75% of funding, Mr. Haus advised that they investigating ways to engage more private community support in the future. Individuals interested in more information on how to support this fine organization or get involved as a mentor may contact Kristian Haus or Daniel Ballon at 619.584.5797.
