this week’s meeting

Illustrious President Frank De Francesco opened our meeting on time as usual, to an unusually full crowd.  Jerrilyn Malana led us in the pledge.  Our usual flag was missing, so Peter Tereschuck’s flag lapel pin substituted nicely.  For our invocation, Rob Berry shared an inspirational  description of “The True Rotarian.”  We dispensed with the morning song, as a far better musical treat was in store for us.  Pete McGuire introduced our morning guests and visiting Rotarians.

Announcements

Ø      Nancy Vaughn reminded us that next week, April 7th, our Club will again host the regional finals for the Four-Way Speech Contest.  We will have an unusually full agenda and audience for the event, so it may not be the best meeting to bring a guest who could attend another meeting.  Our agenda will be reversed – we will start with the speeches and then move to Club business.  Speeches start promptly at 7:30, so come early to be seated with breakfast before the speeches begin.

Ø      The following week, April 14th, we will meet offsite at St. Vincent de Paul at 1501 Imperial Avenue, San Diego.  Father Joe Carroll and Jim Mulvaney will host a tour of the facility.

Ø      President Frank reminded us of our Club Board meeting at his office on April 12th, and the District Council Meeting on April 13th.

Ø      Our next Club service project is “Rebuilding Together” on April 17th.  Those who will be attending have already signed up.  For questions call Dave Dawson.

Ø      The District Conference will be at Barona Casino April 23-25.  The Club will reimburse members half the cost.  Club members may register online at the District web site.

Ø      Jose Hernandez reminded us that Career Services Day is April 28th, in lieu of our regular Club meeting.  Contact Jose for alternative locations.

Ø      Our annual fundraiser is May 1st, at the Hall of Champions, featuring the theme of “All-Star San Diego.”  We are invited to wear sports or athletic uniforms or other attire to celebrate the theme.  Please RSVP or direct questions to Tim Montague.

New Members

We celebrated David Mc Quade having completed his Blue Badge requirements and exchanging his Red Badge for full membership.

We also welcomed four new members into the Club, bringing the total to 110 Club members.  The new members are Dan Fissori who transferred from the La Quinta club, John Addams sponsored by Duane Horning, Cynthia Sener sponsored by Jay Sener, and Victoria Bourus sponsored by Jim Mulvaney.

Program

Rather than a speaker, we were treated to the Latin American music ensemble “Arbol Azul,” meaning “Blue Sea.”  Tim Montague introduced the group.  Arbor Azul is led by Alejandro Espino Aldana (string instruments, percussion, flutes, vocals), and Mary-Ann Mumane (accordion, percussion, vocals), who collaborate with Alejandro Ochoa (pan flutes, string instruments, percussion).  Mary-Ann is from Australia.  The group resides in Tijuana.

Arbor Azul performs rhythmic, lively songs from Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile.  Most of their songs feature pan flutes, guitar and a variety of percussion instruments.  As a creative improvisation, Mary-Ann adds the accordion providing a splendid blend to the melodious and sometimes mournful yet joyful sound.  Among the distinctive Latin American instruments, Alejandro Ochoa plays a “Charango,” which is a small guitar made from an armadillo shell.

The group plays to all age groups, but in particular has a passion for playing with and for children.  For 10 months last school year, Arbor Azul traveled the United States playing at schools.  Arbor Azul played 10 to 14 shows per week, traveling 40,000 miles.  Unlike a traditional concert setting with the audience seated quietly listening, Arbor Azul invites participation and interaction.  The children sing, clap and dance, and even play the instruments.  Arbor Azul makes musical instruments, and teaches how to make both the instruments and the beautiful music they produce.

For more information or to book Arbor Azul, contact Tim Montague or call Arbor Azul at USA 610 894 0665, Mexico 011 052 664)609-6842, or cantoalaujna@yahoo.com.
