this week’s meeting

Today we met offsite for a tour or Father Joe Carroll’s St. Vincent De Paul Villages.  St. Vincent De Paul Village is a network of residential centers providing a “continuum of care” to over 2200 men, women and children daily (936 residents and 1000+ non-residents).  It provides a comprehensive rehabilitation program – medical, dental, alcohol/narcotic, counseling, adult education, literacy, dining room, elementary and high school, children’s pre and after school, chapel and spiritual programs.  The “Villages” include the following facilities:

Ø      Joan Kroc Center - The Joan Kroc Center (JKC) is a mission-style 110,000 square-foot residential building for 310 family members. Children's services, counseling, and a dining room serving 1,500 meals daily are all located in the JKC*. Since opening its doors in 1987, the JKC has been considered the prototype for Father Joe's "continuum of care" centers. Located at 1501 Imperial Avenue, the JKC was made possible by a gift from Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's Restaurants founder Ray Kroc.

Ø      Paul Mirabile Center - The Paul Mirabile Center (PMC) opened its doors in 1994 and offers short-term housing for 350 single adults nightly, including 270 men and 80 women. The PMC serves as the site of the medical and dental clinics: classrooms for literacy and adult education courses: resource room for job searches: and a dining room serving 2,000 meals daily. Gifts from Joan Kroc and San Diego developer Paul Mirabile provided funds for the center.

Ø      Bishop Maher Center - The Bishop Maher Center (BMC) provides long-term transitional housing for 150 single men. Named after Bishop Maher, who spearheaded the first drive to change the lives of San Diego's neighbors in need, the 24,000 square-foot-center opened in 1989.

Ø      Village Place - Village Place offers low-cost rent and support services for "graduates" of St. Vincent de Paul Village. The building features 47 apartments, many with handicapped access, for single adults and families.

Ø      Villa Harvey Mandel - The Villa Harvey Mandel (VHM) opened its doors to 90 single residents on fixed incomes in June 2003. The six-story building includes 85 studio apartments and five one-bedroom units, with many offering views of the Coronado Bridge, Petco Park and downtown San Diego.

Also associated with St. Vincents are the Toussant Teen Center and the National AIDS Foundation/Josue Homes.  The following are some interesting statistics:

Ø      $25-35 million - St. Vincent de Paul Village's annual operating budget ($57,000/day).

Ø      $250,000 - Saved by local hospitals each month through St. Vincent's community prenatal clinic. More than 200 healthy babies are born each year through the program.

Ø      30,000 - Annual patient visits administered by the Village medical clinic.

Ø      2200+ - Number of people assisted every day.

Ø      4000 - Meals served/day.

Ø      180+ - Number of resident children at the Village.

Ø      550 - Staff in Father Joe’s Villages.

Ø      9% - St. Vincent's administrative overhead. This means 91 cents of every donated dollar directly funds programs and services. The average non-profit operates with an overhead expense of 20-35%.

Ø      $2 - Cost to prepare and serve each of the 1.5 million meals the Village provides each year to residents, homeless individuals and the working poor of San Diego, made possible through bulk purchasing and industry partnerships.
