this week’s meeting

The meeting this week started at 7:35 am with a rousing “Good Morning” from Frank.  The Pledge was started off by Mel Gallegos.  Frank gave a moving invocation about how we cannot chose so many things in our lives, but we do chose how we live.  Our songmeisters, Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving were not present today, and our group song suffered through what must have been the worst rendition of “Happy Trails” ever heard.  After we recovered, several guests were introduced.

This Weeks Speaker

Frank, Al Pavich and Nancy

Joe Ciokon introduced Commander Al Pavich, USN, RET, who is the President and CEO of the Vietnam Veterans of San Diego.  Al started off by letting us know that the VVSD location on Pacific Highway will be re-named Veterans Village of San Diego and is currently in phase 1 of an extensive remodeling and expansion project.  Al gave a passionate speech about how people staying in the center are working to rehabilitate their lives and how much improving one life impacts so many others. As the “Founders of STAND DOWN” and “Homeless Court”, they operate 7 locations and 218 beds to successfully help homeless veterans and their families restore their lives and become productive citizens.  Al thanked our Rotary club for its support of the “STAND DOWN” event.  At last years “STAND DOWN” 12% of the veterans who attended took beds that night in a shelter to enter into the program.  This is a great organization working hard to help people who want to help themselves!

Nancy presented an annual Rotary donation to Al at the end of the meeting.
