this week’s meeting

Mary Engles noted that “Spiritual Contact can occur in any position,” so we were given the option of rising or sitting while reciting the Serenity Prayer.  Joe Ciokon led us in the pledge and after Jim Mulvaney’s “Unofficial Irish Ditty,” we all sang, “She’s a Grand Ole Flag.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Tony Eppert announced that for this year’s golf tournament, there will be a prize for the member who brings the most golfers.

Ø      Sept 9th5:30-8:30 p.m. - District Council, La Jolla Marriott - Guest Speaker: Carl Wilhelm Stenhammar, RI President Elect 2005-2006 – Put This On You Calendar!

Ø      The Social Committee has been busy planning another outing to the Jersey Boys at La Jolla Playhouse on October 14th.  Tickets for that event are $35.

Sgt At Arms Mike Gilligan

Ø      Mike started out his fundraising efforts with some sort of a card trick gone awfully bad!  Through her own slight of hand, Lynn Hamilton picked the winning card on the first week of the contest!

Ø      Tim Montague celebrated his 15th wedding anniversary!

Ø      Don Lang, Dave Archambault and Mel Gallegos all celebrated birthdays!

Ø      Jim Mulvaney searched all of Ireland to find a relative, and finally came across Shamus Mulvaney, the biggest bookie in all the land!

Ø      Frank has some inside line on a 50% off promotion for local restaurants.

Ø      Finally, Ron donated a (small) Rotary Centennial jacket (he apparently bought two by mistake).  It went for $35 to Mitra Mujica (I think).

Historical Centennial Minute

During the Great Depression, businesses were failing right and left.  Rotarian Herb Taylor acquired a near bankrupt aluminum company and began to run it using an ethical compass comprised of 4 rules.  His company flourished despite the hard times and, in the next 15-years, paid over $1 million in dividends and built $2-million in net worth (quite something in those days!).  He later donated the copyright to his ethical compass to RI and this became the Rotary 4-Way Test.  Buzz Aldrin planted a pin on the moon containing the Rotary Four Way Test.  So now you know the rest of the story….

This Week’s Speakers

Rotarians Nader Elbanna and Miko Peled have every reason to be fierce enemies.  Miko’s father was a General in the Israeli army who led the 1967 victory.  His niece was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber.  Nader was a Captain in the Jordanian army and witnessed his best friend dying in his arms while Miko’s brother fought against him in the same battle.  (Click Here For More Details On The Stories Of These Two Men)  These two should by all measure of typical human reactions hate each other.  But they have chosen not to hate – they have chosen not to be enemies – they have chosen peace.  Through the San Diego Jewish/Palestinian Dialogue they have found a medium to teach peace rather than revenge.  Teaming up with RI, they are taking their message of peace to the Holy Land through the Wheelchairs To The Holy Land program.  What better way to teach peace than for an Arab child who has been injured in war to receive a wheelchair donated by a Jew, or vice versa.  Through matching grants, a $75 contribution will provide a child with a wheelchair.  $150 will result in an equal contribution to each side of the conflict.  Donations should be made payable to the Coronado Rotary Foundation and sent to Miko Peled, 1005 C Avenue, Coronado, CA  92118.

prologue

We hope everyone who attended this morning's meeting enjoyed hearing about the great work our Speakers are doing for the "Wheelchairs for the Holy Land" Project.  As Ron announced at the meeting, our Club will be giving their Project $150.00 for two wheelchairs.  If any of you would like to also contribute, you may write your checks for $75.00 payable to 'Coronado Rotary Foundation' and write 'Wheelchairs to the Holy Land' on the memo line and Nancy Vaughan said she will collect them at next week's meeting and send them in from our Club.  You may, of course, send it in directly to: Miko Peled, 1005 C Avenue, Coronado, CA  92118.  Thanks for supporting this worthwhile Project.  Please also note that your contribution counts towards Paul Harris Fellowship credits.
