This week’s Bulletin was written by Ken Juen

this week’s meeting

The meeting was started promptly on time at 0738 by our dictator for life, Ron Erbetta, our nearly honorable president. Sorry Carol.  Pete Mcguire did his usual sterling job with the guests and visiting Rotarians, I don’t think Club 33 likes us anymore or they are tired of the view.

Announcements

Ø      District 5340 meeting coming up on 9/9 at 5:30. LaJolla Marriott. Remember the club will pay your way. If you reserve and don’t go, you get to pay.

Ø      The Rotary Foundation seminar is 9/18 at the Salk Institute, please go and see what your money and efforts accomplish in the world.

Ø      You will be glad to know that our state prisons are happily at work producing Rotary license plate frames.  Buy one and feed a convict.  Sorry, the convicts make what go into the frames – I am so confused.  The Rotary symbol on the thing that goes into your frames is $45.  A full blown vanity plate will set you back $115 and show the world that you have disposable income.

Ø      “The Thousand Laughs for a Thousand Smiles” Charity comedy show is Friday, August 27 at 8:30PM. It is fun for a good cause. You must be over 18 and taller than 5 ft to attend.  Sorry Ron.  There are 8 free seats available see Mel Gallegos.

Ø      Here is one for you. Rotaract is having beach volley ball on 9/11, at the beach.  See Geoff [Ed.Note:  please respond to the E-VITE you should receive by e-mail].

Ø      We have a new committee, Business Recognition.  We will present awards to business that help the community.  Martin Blair was the first recipient for his support of Rotaract.  Good job Martin!  Free beer counts.

Sgt.-At-Arms

Ø      Sgt Mike held another of his weird drawings and no winners, so the .75 cents is carried over to next week.

Ø      Mike Clarkson lost 50 lbs and $50.  This is why I refuse to lose weight.

Ø      Dave Ferguson has a son-in-law flying combat search and rescue off the USS Lincoln.  All the best to him and his family.

Ø      Ron Erbetta had 2 close calls in Florida.  He missed the hurricane by a few miles and and the million dollar scratch prize by $999,000.

Ø      I can’t read my notes but I believe Lou Scanlon graduated from the Howard School of Gourmet Cooking recently.  Please correct me if I have that wrong.

Rotary Centennial Minute

Ron entertained and informed us with his weekly Rotary 11 minutes.  How fast can Rotary go from 4 members to 1.2 million members--------------Answer: 99 years.  Due in great part to Jim Danielson.  We gotta get him to speak and tell us how he did it.

This Week’s SPeaker

Steve Waterman introduced us to Christpher Blin who spoke of his trials and tribulations  bringing the 21st century to darkest Africa.  I bet he will appreciate indoor plumbing more now.

Ron reached up and rang the bell at 8:29.
