AUGUST 18, 2004

This week’s Bulletin was written by Lynn Hamilton

(Be careful of who sits by you at the meeting….if it is Tom Sayer, he just may recruit you to the task!)

this week’s meeting

Our gracious president, Ron, called the crowd to order and lost no time correcting Ken Juen’s statement in last week’s Bulletin…”I am not 5 feet tall”.  Eileen Hennessey inspired us with an invocation and in honor of the Olympics, Linda and Jim led us in The National Anthem”.

Despite last week’s poor showing, Club 33 was well represented at our meeting.

Announcements:

Ø      August 27: 1000 Laughs for 1000 Smiles. 4 Seats are still available for this great benefit.

Ø      www.Rotary5340.org: Pres. Ron reminded us to check for District events on the website.

Ø      Sept. 11: Rotary Beach Party with Rotaract at Martin Blair’s amazing beach house. Don’t miss it!

Ø      Rotary License Plates: Sign up sheet was circulated.

Ø      Chris Blin: our international ambassador reported on his meeting in San Francisco regarding the growing Rotary presence in Russia.

Ø      “San Diego Then and Now”: autographed by the author and left unclaimed by the successful bidder #711 at our fundraiser. If it is yours, grab it soon or else it will be sold again!

Ø      Bulletin: Tom Sayer is looking for a few good volunteers to demonstrate their literary ability and sense of humor to join his staff of writers.

Rotary Moment

Despite recurring cries of “Can that be our Moment?” from the crowd after each Rotary related announcement was made, Ron proceeded to quiz us on our Rotary knowledge. Each correct answer won a Rotary pin.

Induction

Sandra Rugg with Walton Business Solutions is now a proud red-badger. Welcome to the Club! Sandra, your turn for the Bulletin next week!

Sgt. At Arms

Ø      Once again 3 tries at the card game and no cigar for the lucky 6 of spades! The pot grows!

Ø      With no “dirt” on members, Sgt. Mike told a very funny joke about Ken Juen and goats. Is this the thanks one gets for writing the Bulletin?

This Week’s Speaker

Nancy Vaughn introduced her former classmate and now columnist at the San Diego Tribune, Logan Jenkins.  With a great deal of wit and intelligence, Logan commented on the dilemma of being a “San Diegan”, the challenges of running the County and City and made no bones about his prediction for the upcoming elections…Ron Roberts for Mayor and Mike Aguirre for City Attorney.
