this week’s meeting

Ron called the crowd to order and brought up Gary Green who recited the long version of the Serenity Prayer as our invocation.  Cynthia Sener led the pledge, and Jim Mulvaney flew solo today in leading us in, You’re a Grand Ole Flag.  We burst into announcements before the usual introductions of guests and visiting Rotarians.

Announcements:

Ø      First Lady Sandy Erbetta had emergency surgery last week, but is doing fine in her recovery.  Get well soon!

Ø      Sept 9 -- District Council at the La Jolla Marriott.  Guest Speaker, Carl Wilhelm Stenhammar, RI President Elect 2005-06 – Registration Is Closed!!

Ø      Sept 10 – District 4100 Winery Tour, Ensenada.

Ø      Sept. 11 -- Rotary Beach Party with Rotaract at Martin Blair’s amazing beach house. 2:30-6:30 pm.  Don’t miss it!  2655 Ocean St, Carlsbad, CA

Ø      Sept 13 – Board Meeting -- 5:30 pm -- Mighty 1090 Studios.

Ø      Sept 25 – Escondido Sunrise "Padres, BBQ at the Q" -- Escondido Sunrise Rotary's 6th Annual Tailgate Party, BBQ at the "Q". All you can eat Carne Asada, Hot Dogs and Drinks, soda's and Beer. 5:00pm at Qualcom Stadium Parking Lot, then Trolley or car pool to Petco Park for the 7:05pm game vs Arizona Diamondbacks. Ø      Oct 11 – Senior Community Center Golf Tournament – See Jim Mulvaney for details.

Ø      Blue Badgers – Congrats to Dan Fissori and Brad Leitch for meeting their blue badge requirements!

Ø      Military News – Tours of the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier are available M-F from 2-4 pm if you can get on the base at North Island.  To get on the base, find someone with a base sticker (like Joe Ciokon or Lou Scanlon) and arrange to have them drive you on the base for a tour.  On a more somber note, four Navy crewmen were lost in an flight accident in Kita Iwo Jima off the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).  A memorial fund has been created for their children.  To donate, click on this link:  Navy Scholarship Fund.

Sgt. At Arms

Ø      Once again 3 tries at the card game and no cigar for the lucky 6 of spades! The pot grows!

Ø      The Roger Showley coffee table book on San Diego history was auctioned off for a cool $50!

This Week’s Speaker

Nancy Vaughn introduced Dr. Neil Treister, MD, the Medical Director of the Cushman Wellness Center, a part of Sharp Healthcare.  At the Center, emphasis is on practical prevention addressing following health factors:

Ø      Cardiac Risk Factors – Blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking, alcohol abuse, etc.

Ø      Diet & Nutrition – Omega-3 fatty acids, naturally occurring antioxidants in brightly colored fruits and vegetables, low glycemic loads, healthy weight

Ø      Fitness – 40-50 minutes of walking or other aerobic activity 5-days per week, light weight training, stretching

Ø      Stress Management – Pulse-Breath Exercise, identify key stressors and work to decrease their influence

Ø      Complementary Care – Yoga, t’ai-chi, qigong, calcium supplements, folic acid, B-complex

Ø      Spirituality and Mental health – spend time with caring communities, religion, friendships, pets, write daily journal
