this week’s meeting

President Ron Erbetta called the meeting to order at 7:30 am.  Jim Mulvaney led the invocation with a memorable Irish proverb, then joined Linda Jalving in leading us in the 60's ballad "Blowin' in the Wind."  After guest introductions, it was announced that Brad Perry has returned from his brief leave of absence, and Tim Montague has embarked on his own, to attend to family matters.

Announcements

Ø      This upcoming Monday (9-13) our Board Meeting will be at Frank's Mighty 1090 Studio offices in UTC at 5:30 pm.

Ø      Rotaract President Jeff Miller announced that the joint Beach Party this Saturday (9-11) will feature a challenge volleyball game that will inaugurate play for the "Blair Jug" perpetual trophy for the winning team.  Come out and be a part of history in the making.

Ø      Bill Poirier of Youth Services Committee announced we will team with the Police Athletic League and Chargers Rookies for mini football workouts with kids Monday afternoons this season.  See Bill for times and places if you want to volunteer.

sgt.-at-arms

Ø      Joe Marshall won our "Split the Pot" card raffle, and took home half the $500 pot that had been building up for the past few weeks.  Other Brags included:

Ø      Jonathan Stone was on TV when he proposed to his fiancée at a local casino, and was 'comped' a limo ride, Elton John tickets, a private jet ride, and a helicopter ride through the Grand Canyon!  Hey big spender!

Ø      The Boys Under 14 soccer team managed by Tom Sayer won its first ever championship in the Notts Forest Tournament this last weekend.  His son, Evan, scored one of the game-winning goals!

Ø      Gary Green proposed 'buying out' Ron’s dubious 'Centennial Moments' with a donation of $20 or more.  Our guest speaker Mark kicked in the first $20 for the cause!  Good on ya, Mark!

Ø      On a more serious note, Mike Jones announced that his wife, Carol, is recovering well from a stroke she suffered in May.  She hopes to be back out one of our Rotary functions this year.

This Week’s Speaker

Our Guest Speaker MARK WATTON is the General Manager of the Otay Water District.  Since San Diego has only 10% indigenous fresh water sources, 90% is brought into the area from somewhere else.  The Colorado River has many states and counties vying for its flows, and a protracted 'Preferential Rights' lawsuit was lost to Los Angeles just recently.  This means that if things get tight, San Diego is exposed to possible shortages next summer.

A big agreement with the Imperial Water Authority was struck earlier for San Diego's benefit.  We will pay for a new lining of the All American Canal, thus plugging leaks and saving massive amounts of water, which we can keep.  A new desalinization plant at the Carlsbad Encina Power Plant is costlier, yet is subsidized by 25% to help it get started.  Reclaimed water for irrigation is also taking off nicely, with a second set of city pipes in the South Bay for this express purpose.

To summarize, in the future we have a goal of 33% 'imported' water while the remaining two thirds should be supplied by indigenous means, desalinization, and reclaimed water.  Thank you, Mark, for the refreshing information.

Meeting was adjourned by Ron at 8:30 am.
