this week’s meeting

President Ron Erbetta called the meeting to order at 7:34 a.m.  Jerrilyn Malana gave an inspiration with a theme of "pay it forward" and "pass it on," which inspired us to do good deeds with the expectation that the recipients will then pass the good on to others.  President Ron remembered how his father had followed this practice and when the money he gave to someone who needed it was later passed on to three needy families.  Mary Engles led the pledge of allegiance and then we sang the theme song to "Gilligan's Island."

Pete McGuire introduced non-Rotarian guests of Bill Poirier, Frank De Francesco and Maureen Eberle, four Rotaract members, and Rotarian guests from Club 33, and El Cajon, La Mesa and Mission Valley Rotary Clubs.  Ron shared a Rotary flag from an all-women Rotary Club in Mexico across the border from Laredo, Texas.

This Week’s Speaker

Nancy Vaughan introduced speaker Bill Ashman from the La Mesa Rotary Club, who has recently returned from a group study project in Kenya and Ethiopia.  Bill said that each year District 5340 selects someone to lead a group and to study a developing area and look for worthy humanitarian projects for Rotary.  Bill took a group of five teachers with him on this trip and said he could have used a medical person and someone knowledgeable about finance too.  He showed slides of towns and places they visited, including pictures of animals they saw on a safari, the only tourist business that is now successfully operating there.  Bill also showed slides of Project Mercy, that takes in 750 children each day, a school for Muslin children built by the Aga Khan, a desk-making project and a program that has built a water storage tank, helping women in a village so that they don't have to walk so far for water each day.  Bill may be reached at ashmanwj@cox.net.

Ron adjourned the meeting at 8:35 a.m.
