this week’s meeting

President Ron Erbetta called the meeting to order at 7:28 a.m.  Rick Logan gave the invocation with a theme of "who really has color."  Brad Leitch led the pledge of allegiance. Linda led the song, “My Bonnie” without the missing Jim Mulvaney.  President Ron’s Centennial Moment was two-fold remembering that in 1989 there were the first women in Rotary and that in 1906 was the first completed Community Service project which was installing a public toilet outside Chicago’s city hall -- how his father had followed this practice and when the money he gave to someone who needed it was later passed on to three needy families.

Pete McGuire introduced non-Rotarian guests of Nancy Vaughan -- speaker Reo Carr, Brigitte Rubidoux and Allison Liewer, Norene Wolff was a guest of a Sam Payne, one Rotaract member David Bradfield, and a Rotarian guests from RB Breakfast.

This Week’s Speaker

Nancy Vaughan introduced speaker Reo Carr from the San Diego Daily Transcript.  Reo was named the editor in chief of the San Diego Daily Transcript in June of 1999, he brings over 20 years of experience as a business executive, editor and reporter to the San Diego business scene.  As editor and chief, Reo is responsible for all editorials, Web Site, and special section content of San Diego’s only daily business publication.

Reo started with a compliment to the Rotary and the work that it does around the world stating an example of when he was reminding of this when traveling to Scottsdale and meeting a woman Rotarian who was on her way to visit the school in Afghanistan built by the Golden Triangle Rotary Club.

He wanted us to envision us launching into space over San Diego looking down on the downtown area and then landing at Lindberg Field.

Reo spoke about the event that was happening as we where meeting about the spaceship that was taking off from the Majave called Spaceship 1 that was involved in a competition to send a non-government vehicle to space.  Paul Allan from Microsoft was one of the major funding partners in this project.  The engine that burns rubber as its fuel was built in our own back yard in Poway by a company called SpaceDev.

He went into a discussion about the downtown ballpark and whether it can be duplicated for the Chargers stadium.

Financial Tremors was the next topic speaking about the City pension plan and the Mayoral race with a surprise possible write in candidate of Donna Frye that was going to shake things up.  He felt that the next mayor will have the job to solve the money problems of the city.  He spoke about whether the city wanted a Mayor that was going to retire after his term or a new aggressive Mayor that wants to have a political future.

The San Diego Transcript is not likely to endorse a Mayor candidate or either candidate for City Attorney.

He gave compliments to the Midway and it’s success.

Ron adjourned the meeting at 8:35 a.m.
