THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron Erbetta opened this morning’s meeting at 7:30 a.m. Jane Barry gave a short invocation about not walking alone through life. Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney then led the group in a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, which sounded great. Ron’s Centennial Moment, which had everyone breathless with anticipation, was about the life of Paul Harris, Rotary’s founder.

Pete McGuire then introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. Al Pavitch (President of the Vietnam Veterans) and Joe Ciokon, both instrumental in the annual Stand Down for veterans, presented a picture to the Club that was taken at the last Stand Down event.  Al told the Club that the new 300-bed facility for homeless veterans was about half completed. President Ron then informed the Club that we for the next Stand Down event would donate $1,500.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      There were so many announcements that this author begs your indulgence if some were missed.

Ø      President Ron announced that our Club has over 60 of its members serving on committees, meaning that well over half of the Club is on some committee serving the Club. However, the Membership Committee needs more members and Ron has asked for volunteers.

Ø      Our Club is trying to adopt a Navy ship and, at the present time, it will most likely be the USS Ronald Reagan.

Ø      Two Rotaract members are going to the annual meeting in Chicago thanks to our Club.

Ø      Patsy Cowett is hosting the Christmas party this year at her home in Bankers Hill.

Ø      Our annual golf tournament is November 19 in Coronado and we are in dire need or more golfers – so, please sign up and bring at least one guest. It is a really fun affair and raises substantial funds for our Club.

Ø      Next week, on October 14th, we are having an evening enjoying the play Jersey Boys in La Jolla. If you are planning to attend, meet at the Mandel Weiss forum on the UCSD campus at 6:30 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The play promises to be very entertaining.

Ø      The next District Council meeting is scheduled for October 12th at Viejas. The topic will be water management.

SGT.-AT-ARMS

Mike Gilligan announced several anniversaries and then auctioned off 3 tickets to a tour of the Midway – Rob Berry was the lucky purchaser.

Joe Marshall was fined for enjoying a two week cruise;  Frank De Francesco bragged that his lovely bride had completed the 3-day walk for breast cancer cure and Tom Sayer told the Club that the frame on his new home is up and they expect to move in next February.

Prez Ron then bestowed a gift on our speaker – a book containing all his prior Centennial Moments speeches he has given at the Club! Groan!

SPEAKER

Blair Blum, a member of the La Jolla Club and our Assistant Governor, introduced our speaker, Sandy Rimer, our District Governor. Sandy began her speech by saying the Prez Ron is the most anal retentive of Rotary presidents – due, most likely, to the gift he had just given her.

Sandy’s speech was impressive and compared the growth of Rotary to that of water. What once was a trickle is now flowing throughout the world. She went on to point out the importance of water as being critical to a safe and healthy world very similar to the impact that Rotary has in the world with all the programs it supports, especially eradication of polio. She used the book Fish as a parallel to Rotary; in the book there are several principles discussed, such as “stay focused” and “make someone’s day”, and these, coupled with the other principles, are very similar to the Rotary organization’s framework.

Sandy then took questions from the audience. Her speech was very enlightening and certainly demonstrated her commitment to Rotary.
