THIS WEEK’S MEETING

HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY DOWNTOWN BREAKFAST ROTARY!

Our 14th birthday “celebration was hosted by immediate past president Frank DeFrancesco. Frank tried to read the centennial moment left by President Ron, but the paper, appearing to be the flushable variety, was only a “header.”.  Oh, well.

Larry Nuffer, professing to be Irish, delivered the  invocation. Hmm, I was thinking that name was originally Nufferinski. Go figure

Lou Scanlon lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, sans badge, as his took a direct hit in the badge box.  Our troops in Iraq aren’t the only ones low on Kevlar!

Announcements

Ø      Mary Dawe presented Juan Antunez, the student of the month from San Diego High School. Juan is the first generation in his family to have college aspirations and he hopes to attend Cal Poly with a focus in engineering.  Juan is active in his church, academics and the student store. Rotary salutes you, Juan.

Ø      We had gobs of non-Rotarian guests and several wannabe’s from Club 33 and Mission Valley. There were 5 anniversaries and 1 birthday…Patsi Cowatt—among the regulars. Whew!

Ø      We bid a heartfelt “adios” to Tim Montague who has relocated to Chicago hopefully for a short period. All the best to you Tim and many thanks for your camaraderie and fund raising efforts here in San Diego.

Ø      Plastic Pumpkin was passed and Susan Bleicher collected $200 for Halloween treats for the upcoming Downtown Senior Center Luncheon November 6th. Spaces are still available to volunteer for this rewarding—and brief!—service commitment.

Ø      Tijuana Home Building project October 30th still needs several volunteers. no experience needed, tools supplied and cheerleaders welcome. This is a great event ..ask Ken Juen to show you his ”essential” Spanish phrasebook from last year.

Ø      Alpha Project: our speaker next week would be delighted to have you “sock” it to him with your best “blanket” phrases and donations of warm clothing for the homeless in downtown San Diego. Bring your items to the October  27th.meeting.

Sgt-At-Arms

Sgt. Mike scrapped football in favor of Wednesday’s hot baseball game between the Yankees and the Red Sox.  Green Bay was the winning choice from last week’s drawing, Winnings were rolled over into this week’s pool because the recipient was absent.  Mitra! What a day to sleep in!

Finally our speaker!

Doug Wilson of the Douglas Wilson Co spent a half hour sharing the story of the evolution of downtown San Diego. Surveys of successful downtowns in Denver, Seattle and Vancouver, to name three, show that diversity, mixed use, access to cultural venues and plentiful parks are a few key components. With these ideas in mind, the Wilson Co started in the 1980’s with our own Symphony Towers, went on the build Park Lofts (highly visible from the ball park) and is currently working on The Mark , a 32 story glass and steel high rise structure housing people and business. The Mark was 80% subscribed before ground breaking! Other key elements proposed for downtown are some of those parks (check the propositions on your current ballot) and a bridge way connecting downtown with the cultural venues of Balboa Park.
