This week’s Bulletin was written by Tom Sayer

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron called this offsite meeting to order at the San Diego Humane Society.  Sandy Rugg inspired us with some words from Charles Swindell.  Cynthia Sener led us in the pledge to Ron’s makeshift “portable” flag.  Then the cries for “From the Halls of Montezuma” in honor of the Marine Corps anniversary were drowned out by a spontaneous round of, “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Christine Thompson will be moving to the Carolinas soon.  We wish her the best!

Ø      WE NEED GOLFERS!!

Ø      Save April 23rd as the date for the Annual Fundraiser.

Ø      We are the Host Club for the evening of December 14th District Council Meeting at the La Jolla Marriott.  The Club pays for the dinner for anyone who signs up to go (but you will be stuck with the bill if you no-show the event).  We should try to have at least 3-tables at this event.

Sgt-At-Arms

Ø      Not much action this week.  Dave Ferguson won the raffle from last week and was promptly urged to fork over a few bills to the Development Director of the Humane Society.

SPEAKER

Nancy Vaughan re-introduced Mark Goldstein, DVM to our Club – he spoke to us at the University Club last May.  Dr. Goldstein is the Executive Director of the San Diego Humane Society and gave us a great tour of this first-class facility.  Before the tour, however, he explained the darker side of animal cruelty.  This topic is important because statistics are clear that violent criminals invariably start out by torturing animals before moving on to human victims.  So the Humane Society has an important investigatory role in rooting out violence in its earliest stages.

Now, on to the gorgeous facility!  Adoptable pets are all housed in “apartment-like” facilities for many reasons.  This environment makes the adoption decision easier to envision by the person looking for a pet.  It is also much easier on the animals – unlike most facilities where the animals are all in cages, there was virtually no barking or other noise coming from the residents.  San Diego is clearly the envy of the rest of the animal treatment world.  Thanks for a great tour!
