THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron Erbetta called us to order a few minutes early.  Dave McKee delivered an invocation, Sandi Rugg led the pledge, and Jim Mulvaney led us in, Jingle Bells.

Announcements

Ø      Due to the timing of the Holidays, the Board Meeting for December has been canceled.

Ø      Mark your calendars for the Rotaract Club’s Jazz For Juvenile Diabetes Event 7-9 pm on December 9th at THIN Located above The Onyx Room at 852 5th Ave. in the Gaslamp Quarter.  Click Here For More Information.

Ø      Dec 14 is the District Council Dinner.  Since we are a sponsor, volunteers are needed to be greeters, etc.  Please contact Ron.  Try to sign up on line to attend so we can have 3-4 tables of 10.  Register online: Rotary5340.org.  Location is the LJ Marriott.

Ø      Remember the Christmas Party will be the evening of Dec 16, Pat Cowett's home, Bankers Hill.

Ø      DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR GIFTS IN RESPONSE TO OUR PROJECT RESPONSIBILITY LETTERS TO SANTA TO THE MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY!  Unwrapped gifts must be turned in on December 8th – Carol Jensen has volunteered to bring clear plastic bags to the meeting, so the special packaging” will be taken care of for you.  Just bring your gifts and the letters and the International Services Committee will take care of the rest!

Ø      Golf Tournament Recap.  Finally tallies are pending, but it looks like we generated $20,000+ for our charitable projects!  Extra special thanks to Ken Tablang who not only sponsored the dinner and brought in additional corporate sponsors, but went well beyond the usual hole sponsorship with his Sushi & Sake bar at the “Hole-In-One” hole.  Most of us appreciated the cheers of, “You Sake” after our attempts at the hole-in-one!  Special thanks also to Carol Jensen for pulling lots of details together at the last moment.  A few unclaimed prizes were auctioned off by the incomparable Mike Gilligan. 

Ø      Mel Gallegos has a hotel room available in Chicago for the Centennial RI Convention.

Ø      Ron introduced a new Club program with the Midway museum – the Live and Learn Program.  We will sponsor disadvantaged kids with scholarships so they can attend this overnight program that otherwise costs $75/student.

New Members

Today was mass induction day, with four new members introduced.  George Mullen and Matt McGowan come to us from the Mission Valley Club, and Cortland Caldemeyer and Steve Seligmann were also inducted.  George is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley, Matt is with Xpectra – a contract manufacturing company located in Tijuana, Cortland is an oral surgeon with the Center For Oral & Facial Surgery, and Steve is with Pacific Coast Teleco. 

While we are at it, the following individuals have been proposed as new members of our Club and will be inducted under the classifications listed below unless written objection is received by our Club Secretary within ten days of the date of this Bulletin:

Ø      Frank De Francesco bragged about his perfect bowling game – 300!

Ø      Linda Jalving took the opportunity to invite us all to hear her sing for the San Diego Festival Chorus on Sunday, December 5th at 3 pm at the Blessed Sacrament Church, 4540 El Cerrito Drive, SD, CA  92115, and for the Christ Church Unity Choir on Sunday, December 12th at 5 pm, 3770 Altadena Avenue, SD, CA  92105.

Ø      Tom Sayer paid a few dollars to brag about his son, Andrew, who scored a hat trick in his soccer’s team’s recent 3-1 victory.

Irwin Herman is better known as, “Herman the Bookman.”  He collects books to donate to jails, schools and other needy agencies.  Since he started this program, he has distributed over 7 million books, and currently works at a pace of about 500,000 per year.  Donations can be dropped off at 4275 37th Street, San Diego, CA 92105.  Check his program out at www.thebookman.org.
