THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron rang in the first meeting of the year on the Midway Carrier Museum, courtesy of the good graces of CEO Admiral Mac McLaughlin and food courtesy of the Monarch School Cabo Café catering program.  To keep warm, Ron was sporting a circa 1964 t-shirt that was issued to him as a Navy ROTC the same month he met Mike Gilligan (Past Pres. G.G. quipped, “It’s still too big for you!”).  Ron covered the invocation by reminding us how blessed we all are in comparison with the vast majority of the rest of the world’s inhabitants.  Joe Ciokon led us in the pledge followed by Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving leading us in, You’re A Grand Ol’ Flag.  Pete McGuire introduced quite the assemblage of guests, including spouses of Pres. Ron, Sig Weitzman, Lynn Hamilton, Sandi Rugg, and a few more, plus Cynthia Sener’s mother-in-law (can we safely assume she is also Jay’s mother!).

Announcements

Ø      Thanks, again, to Carol Jensen for coordinating with Gail Levin of Monarch School to provide our breakfast this morning.

Ø      The Quarterly Meeting of the Board and Committee Chairs is this coming Monday, January 10th from 5:30 to 7:30 at Littler Mendelson, 701 “B” Street, 13th Floor

Ø      Next week’s meeting will be OFFSITE at: USO of San Diego, 303 'A' Street Suite 100 (corner of 3rd Avenue), San Diego, CA 92101, Tel. 619-235-6503.  Parking is available at meters on the street, or in the ACE Parking lot across the street and there is another lot diagonally across the street.  Since we will have breakfast catered again, PLEASE RSVP TO:  cjensen@francisparker.org and let her know if you are bringing a guest.

Ø      Cynthia Sener passed around a sign-up sheet for the St. Vincent de Paul Village Career Fair on January 29th – the last two meetings of this month we will be collecting business attire including such things as suits, sport coats, dress shoes, brief cases, portfolios, etc.  Please clean out your closets!

Ø      Ron read us a warm holiday card from the Rotaract Club.

Ø      Ron wanted to make sure we gave Susan Millard-Davis, Lynn Hamilton and Patsy Cowett a huge thank you for a wonderful holiday party last month!

Ø      Admiral McLaughlin thanked us for kicking off the effort for a Scholarship Fund for the Midway on-ship overnight education programs, and promised that the Monarch kids would be first to benefit.

Ø      Frank De Francesco encouraged us all to attend the Centennial District Conference February 4-5 at the Westin Horton Plaza Hotel.  Registration is only $150 for the entire weekend, or $90 for the Paul Harris Gala Dinner on February 5th.  Rooms at the Westin are available at $165/night.  Visit www.rotary5340.org to register.

Ø      Ron asked our patience until after the Board meeting for an announcement on ways to contribute to the relief efforts for the tsunami victims.  More will be announced.

Ø      For our Centennial Moment, Ron recounted the exhilaration of the 1911 Rotary International Convention when the words Service Above Self were first assembled in that particular order!

SGT-AT-Arms

Ø      Don Lang won the football pool again!  It must be a fix!

Ø      Gail Levin announced the February 10th Bruce Bochy Golf Tournament to benefit Monarch School.  Raffle tickets are available for $5, and you do not need to be present to win.

Ø      Linda Jalving announced that she will be performing at the Westminster Church at Cañon and Talbott in Point Loma this Friday, 1/7 at 7 pm.  Your $15 donation will help support the Downtown Crisis Center.

Ø      Ron paid $25 for each coast to celebrate having purchased a condo in Marblehead – now they have homes on both the East Coast and West Coast.

Ø      Mike Sisson couldn’t help notice Jim Mulvaney’s sporty tennis shoes this morning, and paid $5 so that the rest of us wouldn’t miss them either!

Ø      Dave McKee paid a few bucks to celebrate having brought his first guest to Rotary – only problem is that he brought the guest LAST WEEK WHEN WE WERE DARK!

Ø      Jay Sener bragged about spending New Year’s Eve in Paris.  Let’s see now, that could have been Vegas, Texas, Riverside County – you gotta be more specific!
