THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Standing in for President Ron, Frank De Francesco ran a superb meeting at the USO and ended it with undoubtedly the best centennial moment yet seen.  (He brought in a ringer to do the job: Jill DiBerardino of the USO.)

The Monarch School Cabo Café once again catered the meeting with their excellent cuisine.  Mel Gallegos gave a heartfelt invocation to “remember our troops,” Margaret Oppliger led the pledge and actually remembered the words, and Linda Jalving led a stirring (if somewhat painful) version of the Star Spangled Banner.  Martin Blair issued his renowned weather report and it was “sandals” through the weekend, meaning sunshine ahead folks.  Pete McGuire introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians.  Gilson, a visiting Rotarian from Rio d Janeiro (that’s in Brazil everyone), made a flag exchange.

This Week’s Program

Nancy Vaughan, who thought her dream had finally come true in finding “Mr. Wright,” introduced Colonel Regan Wright, CEO and President of the USO.  Regan previously spent 30 years with the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a colonel.

We learned that the USO stands for “United Services Organization” and was formed in 1941 as a civilian support group for the military.  It receives no funding from the U.S. government and 99% of its services are dedicated to enlisted men and women.  The USO provides a wide array of support services and entertainment for our troops around the world in both peacetime and war.  Bob Hope may have been one of the longest running USO entertainers (1940’s almost to the present day), but from the pictures we saw it looked as though Pamela Anderson was the odds on favorite over the Lemon Drop Kid.

Thank you Colonel for a great presentation.
