THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM
We were honored to have Cecil Steppe,
President and CEO of Urban League of San Diego County and “Mr. San Diego
2004” speak to us. After holding numerous responsible positions
with the Probation Department for 28 years, Mr. Steppe was asked to serve a 90
day position with the Department of Social Services, only to request a six year
extension upon learning the needs for change.
The Department was tasked with Child Protection, guarding against Elder Abuse
and In Home Services. He determined that
Welfare, although well intentioned, had poor results. He spent his six years, directing the
department to focus on family, implementing welfare reform to help people to
help themselves. He directed the department
to provide the tools so people can become self sufficient.
At age 64, he became Director of Community
Intervention. Children’s mental
health became one of his biggest challenges.
Upon his retirement, he was asked for help by the Urban League of San
Diego County. The Urban League of San
Diego County is 53 years old, with the Urban League itself being a 95 year old
organization, started by a white woman and a black man as a movement to help
the disadvantaged become self sufficient.
They help people from all ethnic backgrounds, serving 15,000 people in
Next week’s speaker will be Dave Nuffer with the topic, Jerry Colemanisms.
