THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron Erbetta rang us to order and promptly invited Mary Engles to deliver the invocation.  She read from the writings of Margaret Collier Graham.  Steve Seligmann led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance.  “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” was led by David McKee and Mary Engles.  But alas, the Membership suddenly realized, halfway through, that no one knew all the words.  A round of applause erupted for those who thought they did.

Centinial Moment

During World War II, Rotarians established the Rotary Relief Fund to help war victims.  This set the stage for Rotary’s increasing involvement in World Peace.  In a series of meetings between 1943 and 1945, Rotarians participated in the early formation of the United Nations.  During the1945 United Nations Charter Conference, select Rotarians were given advisor status by the organization.

GUEST SPEAKER

The membership was pleased to have David Nuffer address the Membership.  Mr. Nuffer is well known in San Diego as a former Chamber of Commerce Chairman, a San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau Chairman, and public relations sage.  He is also a Hemingway buff, Imperial Valley historian, Padre’s fanatic and accomplished ukulele player.  However, Mr. Nuffer agreed to speak to the Club about another of his extensive efforts, as he is the community’s foremost collector of (Jerry) Colemanisms.

Mr. Nuffer has no qualm with Mr. Coleman’s knowledge of baseball – how to play it or call it – just his occasional malapropos.  During the last 27 years he has been collecting, Mr. Nuffer has amassed over 900 Colemanisms, his favorite being: “He’s in ahead of the slide!”  Others include:

Ø      This game is like a yo-yo, when one side goes up, the other goes down.

Ø      If he can catch it, he can reach it.

Ø      Hindsight is always better than what you’re looking at now.

Ø      The dress code in Pittsburgh today is anything that covers anything you don’t need to leave uncovered.

Ø      He’s the best player who doesn’t play when he’s not playing.

Ø      Webster of the Expos has stolen 22 bases in 17 attempts.

Ø      Nolan Ryan has the most elastic arm ever made by human hands.

Ø      When you don’t hit it, nothing happens.

Ø      He got it before it got there.

And of course,

Ø      You can’t win when they beat you.
