This week’s Bulletin was written by Jack Gilbert

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Ron Erbetta called the 31st meeting of the Centennial year to order and invited Jack Gilbert to deliver the invocation.  Jack shared a quote from Mother Theresa on Prayer, Faith, Love, Service, and Peace.  Mel Gallegos then led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney led a rousing “Rotary style” Oh! What a Beautiful Morning!

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

The Progressive Card Game continued without a winner.  Sandy Rugg celebrated her birthday on a recent cruise.  Melissa Blackburn (???) acknowledged the 16th Annual Women’s Resource Fair on behalf of battered women and our club’s contribution to that cause.  Dave Ferguson’s musician son has signed a letter of intent to work with a prominent publishing company.  Lynn Hamilton told of her son’s belief that there one and only one Erin Brockovich, and that is Julia Roberts.

PRESENTATIONS

Ø      Ron Erbetta and Duane Horning presented a further $5,000 to Paul Downey, president of the Senior Community Center (our Centennial Project), bringing the club’s total contribution for this year’s Centennial Project to $17,850.  Mr. Downey expressed is appreciation for both the financial support and the volunteer efforts of club members.

Ø      Sandy Rugg was presented with her Blue Badge by Jay Sener and Ron Erbetta.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Ron thanked the Centennial Committee for all their hard work putting together today’s meeting.  (Nancy Vaughan, Larry Nuffer, Susan Bleicher, Eileen Henesey, Bobbi Spinner-Flack, Mary Dawe and Carol Jensen).

Ø      Our Club has purchased half a flagpole in the Flag Court at Petco Park.  There will be a reception in the Flag Court on opening day, April 8th.  More details to follow.

Ø      The Centennial was celebrated at the District Council meeting with a hundred-candle cake.  Mel Gallegos also presented a lovely slideshow at the same event. More information from the meeting: The Rotary Foundation has raised $1.1billion over the past 100 years!  And there was much organizational resistance before women were finally admitted to Rotary in 1989.

Ø      The 2006/7 World-Wide Governors’ Meeting will be held in our district: A great honor.

Ø      Mayor Murphy has proclaimed today Rotary Day in San Diego.

Ø      Other club banners collected over the past 15 years are now arranged and on display.  These banners will be (were??) displayed at a special luncheon hosted by Club 33 (???)

Ø      Our Club’s contributions have been recognized in the publication Midway Currents and Joe Ciokon was recognized in the Volunteer Spotlight section of the same issue.

Ø      Ron shared how honored he feels to be our Centennial President.  He noted that the Club is 104 members and growing and that Rotaract is healthy.  He offered his heartfelt appreciation for the contributions of the members.  He then donating $1 per year ($100) to the Club.

Ø      Universal disappointment greeted Ron’s news that he would not be sharing a Centennial moment this week.

Ø      Nancy Vaughan thanked members for their contribution to the Preuss School “Midnight Mechanics” Robotics Team and reported that they are doing very well in competition.

PROGRAM

The remainder of the program was devoted entirely to celebration of the Rotary Centennial.

Ø      Nancy Vaughan introduced a special honored guest, Paul Harris (aka Joe Marshall).  Mr. Harris delivered observations consistent with someone born 137 years ago.

Ø      Larry Nuffer shared some humorous prospective Centennial moments.

Ø      Past presidents were introduced and acknowledged. Those attending shared some of their memorable moments from their time with Rotary.  Those able to attend were Tom Sayer, Alan Talbott, Peter Tereschuck, Melissa Blackburn, and Frank De Francesco).

Ø      Charter members were introduced and recognized by Alan Talbott.

Ø      A Special Recognition Award was made by Carol Jensen and Ron Erbetta to Don Lang for his many special contributions, to a thunderous standing ovation.

Ø      On behalf of Rotaract, Andrea Espinosa announced that a BBQ grill had been presented to the Senior Community Center and use of the grill will be kicked off with an event on Saturday.

Ø      The meeting ended with a full-voiced singing of Happy Birthday Rotary led by Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney.
