THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Call to Order:  President Ron Erbetta called the 33rd meeting of the Downtown San Diego Rotary to order.  As usual Ron got a few cracks in regards to his height – this time he said that sometimes even his wife teases him. Ouch!  Ron, we all know short people are beautiful too!

Invocation/Pledge:  Ms. Mitra Mujica gave an inspiring invocation with a reading from Helen Keller.  It reminded us that when one door closes there is always another one opening up for us -- if we only look for it.  Mr. Robert Berry led us in the pledge.

Song of the Day: Ms. Linda Jalving led the group in our morning song, “Zipidée Doo Da.” It seemed as if many of us had forgotten the words as we kept repeating the same verse.  All in good fun – it closed with lots of laughter.

Announcements

Ø      There will be a board meeting March 13, 2005. The last board meeting of the quarter will be April 11, 2005 at the senior community center.

Ø      Jonathan Stone and Alex Kwoka promoted getting involved in Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  Relay for Life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer.  Teams of 8-15 people camp out at a local high school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path.  Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event – because cancer never sleeps. The event will be held on July 30-31, 2005 from 10:00am-10am at Morley Field.  Opening ceremony is at 10:00am, Survivor ceremony is at 12:00pm and the luminaria ceremony is at 7:30pm.  Jonathan Stone will pass around sign up sheets.  The kickoff meeting will be at the 5th Quarter in the Gaslamp on March 22, 2005 at 6:00pm.  If you can’t join in but would like to donate a gift, contact Devon Foster at (619) 417-4153.

Ø      Maureen Eberle announced that Saturday, April 9 will be a District Assembly meeting and encourages everyone to attend.  It will be held at the La Jolla County Day School.  Breakfast and registration starts at 7:30am and goes until noon.  If you attend the club will pay for your meal.

Ø      This year for our annual Rebuilding Together program we will be helping a 70 year old woman named Everlina.  She was born in Texas on a cotton farm to a preacher.  She was married at 14 and had her first child at 15!  She never learned to read because she was thought to be slow.  Come to find out she actually had dyslexia.  At 68 years of age she was determined to finally learn how to read and she did!  This year we will be helping her rebuild her home.  The scheduled day is April 23 from 7:30am-1:00pm.  Yes it is the same day as our annual fundraiser – but if we can get a good number of people out there to help with the painting and cleaning we can get in and out a lot quicker!  Anyone who knows any contractors that may be willing to help please contact Maureen Eberle.

Ø      Fundraiser update by Warren Potts.  He encourages everyone to get their silent auction items, services and donations in by next meeting.  Susan Bleicher will be holding the physical items for the fundraiser.  Thank you for the financial contributions by Steve Espino, Dave McKee and Brad Benter.

Ø      March is Preventing Blindness Month.  If you have any useable eyeglasses including sunglasses, please bring them to our next few meetings so they can be recycled and used by others.  There will be a box in the back of the room.

Ø      Frank De Francesco reminded everyone that the Paul Harris Fellowship has an official Rotary list.  Call/see/write him about it.  For each contribution you make the club will match!

NEW MEMBER

Jim Mulvaney introduced our newest member Dan Loomis who is the senior V.P. for Driver Alliant.  He has been with the company for over 30 years.  Has been coming to our meetings now for three months!  He is currently helping with the golf tournament fundraiser and is looking forward to getting involved in other Rotary functions.  Welcome Dan Loomis!

Sgt. At Arms

Ø      Mike Gilligan must have gone through the fines quickly because I don’t remember hearing about any.  The pot is up over $200 with no winner again!  Dave Dawson gave $20 to give Jonathan Stone a hard time about having to loan him money to pay for his Padre tickets!

Program

Jay Jeffcoat, VP for public and community relations for the Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center, informed us of all the wonderful discoveries the center is making.  He said he was filling in for Dr. Albert B. Deisseroth, M.D., Ph.D, president of CEO of the Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center, who could not be here today.  Jay got involved with the center two years ago when he decided to reduced the amount of time dedicated to his law practice and devote more time to community service.

SKCC is located on a 10 acre campus atop the Torrey Pines Mesa in the center of one of the largest concentrations of biotechnology/health science companies, cancer centers and pharmaceutical research and development institutes in the world.  The Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center was formed to translate laboratory discoveries into non-toxic treatments of cancer.  It was formed 12 years ago with the recruitment of very creative and talented scientists and it has become a regional and national resource for research into the biology of the cancer cell and its vasculature.  Their team has created ways for targeting chemotherapy drugs and radiation to the cancer cells and their vasculature, sparing normal tissues, thereby reducing side effects.  Cancer vaccines have been developed that could potentially be used to eradicate cancer cells throughout the body reducing recurrence rates.  Dr. Jan E. Schnitzer, M.D has developed ways of delivering radiation and chemotherapy to cancer tissue that are 150 times more efficient than with non-targeted administration.  He has accomplished this by developing antibodies that recognize and bind to the inner surface of the blood vessels that are in tumor tissue.  This work has opened up new directions in cancer imaging and therapy.  For more information on this process go to www.skcc.org.  Private contributions play a pivotal role in the growth of the SKCC.  To continue cancer research, SKCC relies on the support of people who believe in finding discoveries to build a healthier future for us all.  For more information on how your contribution can help, contact the Director of Development Karen Amoroso at 858-410-4163 or www.skccfoundation.org
