THIS WEEK’S MEETING

If I wasn’t always so late, I would know who led the pledge!  I did catch the invocations by Hugh Largey and Mike O’Gilligan, though!  And what else could we sing but, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling?”  Well, how about a more bawdy Irish ballad, sung by Jim Mulvaney, recommending some affection directed to his, well, you know…….

Announcements

Ø      RI Donations:  Remember that the Club will match every dollar contributed to the RI Foundation.  Starting from scratch, $500 will earn you Paul Harris Fellow status.  Check with Frank De Francesco or Mel Gallegos for your current contribution status.  So if you have previously contributed $600, you can reach Paul Harris Fellow status with only an additional $200.

Ø      Past RI President Cliff Dochterman will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming District Assembly from 7:30-noon on April 9th at La Jolla Country Day.  If you haven’t heard Cliff speak before, you really need to attend.  Sign up for this informational session and the Club will pay the admission cost.

Ø      We’re sorry to report that Christopher Blin has submitted his resignation from the Club due to work conflicts.  Good luck, Chris!

Ø      Susan Bleicher appealed to us all for silent auction items for the upcoming Fundraiser.  Frank De Francesco suggested going to the Mighty 1090 website and purchasing a Mighty Maitre D’ gift certificate good for a $100 meal for only $50.  A link has been added to the Fundraiser webpage on our Club’s website.

Ø      March is Preventing Blindness Month.  If you have any useable eyeglasses including sunglasses, please bring them to our next few meetings so they can be recycled and used by others.  There will be a box in the back of the room.  Click Here For More Information On How To Help.

Student of the month

Carol Jensen introduced Roxanna Flores as our Student of the Month for March.  Roxanna has an incredible 4.13 GPA while participating for 4-years in soccer, softball, cross country and track and field!  She also volunteers 8-10 hours per week at the City Heights Technology Center.  Roxanna wants to attend UCSD for a biotech major.

Sgt. At Arms

Ø      Mike Sisson plucked the three of spades and won over $200!

Ø      Our guest speaker donated opening day Padre tickets for auction, and Frank threw in entry to the Mighty 1090 pre-game party.  Lynn Hamilton was the successful bidder (for Peter’s 50th) at $200!

Ø      Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated by Mel Gallegos (36th anniversary), Steve Espino, Rick Logan and Carolyn Chen.

Ø      Jenny Goodman bragged about her baby girl’s first birthday!

Ø      Mike Sisson celebrated the birth of his son, Aden Jacob.

Ø      Nancy Vaughan recounted entering the Twilight Zone – a coincidental meeting with PDG Pat Crowell on some remote landing strip in Mexico, just as she was trying to chase him down to speak to the Club.

Centennial Moment

Ron recounted how Rotary grew exponentially in its second fifty years of existence.

Program

Steve Violetta, Padres Executive VP, described his role with the Padres as, “Raising the money so Kevin Towers can spend it!”  By all accounts, 2004 was an extremely successful year for the organization.  The Padres had 20,000 season ticket holders, total attendance over 3 million fans, an average attendance of 37,344, and they outdrew teams such as Seattle, Boston, Atlanta and the NY Mets.  Parking and transportation were pleasant surprises – at least after the Aztecs Invitational Tournament.  The prices for parking will actually be lowered this year.

The Padres are very proud of the new ballpark – in terms of colors, textures, design, architecture and location, it probably reflects the San Diego community better than any other facility in MLB.  Some exciting changes in the food offerings can be expected this season – the Friar Frank has been selected after a long and arduous search!  Grilled, not boiled, it is expected to be the best hot dog in the City.  Joining it will be a variety of sausages, a do-it-yourself nachos bar, Anthony’s seafood chowder in bread bowls, and Rubio’s street tacos to join its fish tacos.  There will be six new point-of-sale locations added.  Plus an improved out-of-town scoreboard, re-painted batters’ eye, 700 new directional signs, and much more.  So take ME out to the ballgame!!
