Ø      If you purchased tickets to the April 8 Rotary event at Petco Park, here are the plans for that evening.  We will meet beforehand at Martin Blair's Kansas City Barbecue (610 W. Market) at about 5:00 PM.  Martin will have a wonderful spread of hotdogs, chips, beer and all the trimmings for us!  Last year we sat outside and it was just great!  We will walk over to Petco at about 6:15, in plenty of time for the 7:05 game start.

Ø      Save May 20th for the next Rotaract competition – a bowling tournament.

Ø      Rotaractor Meghan Eagleson described the up coming Fund Raiser at the Handlery Hotel for the Lost Boys Rotaract charity.  The Evening of Hope will take place on Saturday, April 16th, 2005 at the Handlery Hotel, Mission Valley, San Diego.  The event will be a sit down dinner followed by cultural entertainment and an auction.  The proceeds will go to the Lost Boys Rotaract to start a community bank and to save for their next service project, which is a return trip to Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya to teacher English and cultural orientation class.  A ticket to the event is $50 and a table of 8 is $350.  Rotaract is also seeking anyone interested in donating gifts or gift packages to raffle and auction off, or becoming a sponsor for the event.  For more information, please contact Meghan Eagleson at (619)641-7510 x229 or (408) 472-0013, MeghanE@theirc.org.

THis Week’s Program

This week’s speakers were Pamela Thorsch, Everlena McNelty, David Dawson and Maureen Eberle on the Rebuilding Together charity.  Our Club’s project is to perform our version of Extreme Home Makeover on Ms. McNelty's house on April 23.  Our program is to rebuild her home in one day, similar to the TV show, but without the major construction.  In addition to your time and building expertise on 4/23, we need carpet (1200sq. ft.), linoleum (350sq. ft.) home furnishings (i.e; drapes, blinds, sofas, chairs dinning room tables, etc.) and anything that you might not want anymore.

Everlena McNelty was born in the 1930’s on a cotton farm.  She worked long days picking cotton until her hands hurt.  She also worked caring for white people’s children.  She has so many stories about what life was like back then, and all the abuses they went through.  She was not able to go to school because they said she was slow.  Actually she was dyslexic so never learned to read.  At 14 she married and had her first child at the age of 15.  She now has 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  Her husband left her with nothing after 50 years of marriage.  At age of 70, she heard an advertisement on the television about literacy. So she called them up, got a volunteer, and learned how to read.  She truly is an inspiration!  She now has a foster child, about 5 years old living with her, whose mother was a drug addict.

For more information on how to either donate items or to volunteer for the event, please contact Maureen or Dave, or contact Pamela Thorsch, Executive Director, Rebuilding Together San Diego, 9225 Dowdy Dr. #111, San Diego, CA 92126, pthorsch@earthlink.net, Direct line: (619) 280-0251.
