THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President-elect Maureen Eberle called the meeting to order.  Bill Poirier gave the invocation and Mike Gilligan led the pledge. Jim Mulvaney led us in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”.

Pete McGuire introduced the visiting Rotarians (one from Riverside) and guests.  Mike Gilligan announced the winners of the March Madness game - Mary Engles and Nancy Miller (his girlfriend!!!!) and presented Mary with her winnings.  He then tossed beverage cozies contributed by The Mighty 1090 AM (Frank De Francesco) to those members willing to pay from $.50 up for them!  A Padre ticket was auctioned off to Duane Horning and Opera tickets were auctioned off to Dave Ferguson. 

Announcements

Ø      April 8 - Padre Game - dinner cancelled due to Flag Ceremony being moved up.  All attending should meet at the park by 5:30 for the ceremony.  Those wanting refunds for the dinner should contact Lynn Hamilton.  If you don’t the club will keep the $10 as a donation.

Ø      April 9 - District Assembly.  Please sign up.

Ø      April 12 - District Council - 4 Way Speech Contest

Ø      RSVP ASAP to Carol Jensen for the April 23 Fundraiser on the Midway.

Ø      Jonathan Stone gave a moving report on the RYLA retreat held this past weekend.  He and Maureen attended and described the impact this event had on both them and the teens involved.  Jonathan encouraged all who have not yet participated to plan to do so.

Ø      April 16 - Lost Boys fundraiser luncheon - Cost $50

Ø      Jay Sener inducted new Blue Badger Jack Gilbert and new member Tim Hawken.

Ø      April 20th is Vocational Services Day.  Meeting will be held offsite at 4 different locations.  Details will be posted on the website.

This Week’s Speaker

There was NO Centennial Minute so we went right into the program.  Mel introduced speaker Christine Brenner, R.N., Procurement Coordinator for Lifesharing.  Lifesharing™ Community Organ and Tissue Donation is a community-based, federally designated, non-profit organization dedicated to saving and enhancing lives.  There are currently 90,000 people waiting for a possible organ donation.  700 of them are under the age of 5.  1,543 live in San Diego.  This organization:  honors the wishes of donors; raises awareness of the value of and need for organ donation; represents people on the waiting list; assesses the potential donator and speaks with the family regarding donation.  Following is a list of WHAT can be donated:  corneas, heart, liver, lung, pancreas, kidneys, skin, bone, bone marrow, cartilage, tendons, fascia, dura.  One donation can save 8 lives and enhance 60 more.  No one is too old to donate and there is no expense to the donor.  Please visit www.lifesharing.org for a full website of details and visit www.donatelifecalifornia.org to sign up as a donor.
