This Week’s Meeting

This weeks meeting was called to order at 7:30am by Mr. Ron Erbetta. Ron identified this meeting as the 42nd meeting of the Rotarian Calendar with 7 more to go. Pete McGuire gave us the Invocation with the definition of” Impossible” by Mohammad Ali. Linda Hamilton led us in the Pledge. Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney took us to new heights with this week’s version of America the Beautiful.

Announcements

Ø      Ron announced the completion of Everlena’s Home enhancement project, giving a huge THANK YOU to Dave Dawson and all the Rotarians that pulled together to make that happen.

Ø      Evan Papel was there to promote the Final push for the Rotaract event May12th at the side bar- Ace of Hearts fundraiser-Ron announced that SD Downtown Breakfast Rotary will match the first $2,000 funds raised at the event.

Ø      Ron informed us that Rotary International will be having monthly forums at the Mission Valley Hilton (the last Monday of each month) on “Understanding Climate Change.”

Ø      Ron Indicated that this years Fundraiser set a record of net $30,000- He asked all committee members to stand and be acknowledged.

Ø      Cynthia Senor reported that there were still 9 auction items from the fundraiser still outstanding. She recognized Linda Jalving for contributing the MOST Single items, Maureen Eberle for the Highest Revenue Generating items and Margaret Oppliger for the best re-gifting items.

Ø      Jay Senor reported another RECORD for the club this year… we now have 106 members!

Ø      New Member- Joe Escobio was inducted-A retired military special weapons specialist, Joe will be a valuable asset to the club with his expertise in Computer solutions and Law Firm Administration.

Ø      Pete McGuire ran through the attendance list and guests were introduced.

Ø      Mike Gilligan collected another $40 for a bracelet that was auctioned off after his review of Birthdays and Brags. It was noted that Mike has broken the RECORD for raising funds as Sergeant-at-Arms with a total of more than $6,000 so far!!

Ø      Carol Jensen presented the student of the month award to 4th grade student Tyrone of Monarch School for his great attitude, competency and willing to always want to learn more.

Ø      Ron reminded us of the Rotary National Convention taking place in Chicago from June 18-22. So far, 37,000 people have registered.

Ø      Jonathan Stone reminded us of the Adopt-A-Block Event Sat., May, 21st.

Ø      Lynn Hamilton made us all aware of the “Rotaract Challenge”- Friday, May 20th at the Mira Mesa Lanes.  You can not only bowl for $15 but they will provide some nice shoes as well!

Ø      Centennial moment- Over the last 100 years, Rotary is responsible for the global eradication of Polio.

This Week’s Speaker

Susan Bleicher introduced our speaker of the day, Cindy Stankowski -- Director of San Diego Archaeological Center. Did you know we have archaeological sites and artifacts here in San Diego dating man’s presence here over 15,000 years ago?  Cindy took us through a fascinating time line of the history of the development of our culture here in San Diego. She showed us how certain artifacts that are found can allow us to know such things as what kind of food was eaten, how the tribes migrated and what kind of animals might have been here during those times.
